(feel free to move this, mods..)
there are countless mythologies from around the world where gods are injured, but heal and even come back from the dead... but so far, i have not found one single dismembered god that was able to regrow/heal his important and beloved manlyness. goddesses weep and empires fall, but stubs remain stubs..

any thoughts, or references to prove otherwise???

Check out Osiris. Isis made a replacement phallus in order to conceive Horus after Osiris was killed and dismembered by Set.

yes, i know of that story...

is there a particular text you prefer or recommend??

...the tale of anu and kumarbi (who actually bit off and ate anu's "manhood") is another story i find rather interesting on this subject.

meh, well, i hope someone can add more to this list.. looking especially for contrasts/comparisons between ethnic versions..

One mans metaphor is another man's divine history ;)

Enki would hump anything that was still alive...and while the individual stories may have had some inner meaning (Wheel of Morality turn, turn turn...show us the lesson we must Learn) the actual content sometimes (seemingly) proved otherwise.

Well...according to all the phallic refferences in those stories I guess I am saying that *shrug*

The bible says that Man was created in Gods image...that does imply that god has a winkie ;)

..so yeah, what could kumarbi biting off anu's stuff during a wrestling match possibly mean metaphorically??
anu remained in power, and the biter became ill and possibly spawned three more creatures/gods/rivers...
One myth, known as the "Song of the Kingship in Heaven", describes three aeons of succession before the triumph of Tessub, the weather god. First Alalu was king in heaven, served by Anu. Anu overthrew Alalu and was served by Kumarbi. Then Kumarbi overthrows Anu and castrates him: "(Kumarbi) bit his (Anu's) loins, and his 'manhood' united with Kumarbi's insides like bronze (results from the union of copper and tin). When Kumarbi had swallowed the 'manhood' of Anu, he rejoiced and laughed out loud. Anu turned around and spoke to Kumarbi: 'Are you rejoicing within yourself because you have swallowed my manhood? Stop rejoicing within yourself! I have placed inside you a burden. First, I have impregnated you with the noble Storm God (=Tessub). Second, I have impregnated you with the irresistible Tigris River. Third, I have impregnated you with the the noble Tasmisu", H. A. Hoffner, Jr., Hittite Myths (Atlanta, 1990), pp. 40-41. G. Wilhelm, The Hurrians (Wiltshire, England, 1989) pp. 59-60 writes: "There is no doubt about the parallels between the Hurrian myth of succession and the Theogony of Hesiod, the Greek poet living in Boeotia in about 700 B.C.. Just as in the Hurrian myth Anu, the god of heaven, is castrated by his son Kumarbi, to be deposed in his turn by the weather god Teshup, so Kronos becomes ruler of the gods after the castration of his father, Uranus, god of heaven, only to be usurped by Zeus, the thunder god".

It's metaphoric. Literalism in religion is for the masses who want stories to explain life. The inner, esoteric meanings are for those actually engaging with and through the deities.

well, mataphorically or not, "it" never seems to grow back anyways hehe... and this deserves further study!!

btw, mmothra, do you find kinglists, stories of succession and other such mythologies completely metaphoric too??

Not really.

From what little I know they primarily serve a specific purpose in a literal sense, i.e. giving legitimacy to the ideology's "chosen one", whether it is an individual (rarely) or a priestly class who "represent" that individual. Certainly the Davidic lists of kings serve to justify the Hebraic theocracy and I think the same can be said of Egyptian and Mayan lists of kingly successions.

Make sense?

It is a succession story but one emphasizing symbolic elements. I would reckon that it is related to the seemingly universal idea of the gradual degeneracy of this universe represented by the movement of divine authority away from a pancreator to godly beaurocrats (ala Hesiod). It is a way of explaining why the world is so imperfect, we have moved further and further from the Source.

Your mileage may vary.

I think if it is metaphoric...then the gods themselves are as well...but I dont really think that *confused*

Either way though, I see no reason a GOD could not just regenerate a new penis. Mice can do it ;)

Though, to actually claim it's never been done may be a bit premature...it may just depend on the time line of the stories.

Story one: God has kids
Story two: God gets penis cut off
Story three: God has more kids

That may not specifically say that it grew back...but if a penis was used for the first batch, then chances are a penis was also needed for the second batch. But then...as it's been said, a penis is not really needed in the astral (accept maybe in our own limited minds).

a penis is not really needed much either... it is just a pleasing vehicle to deliver the "goods"..
the satchel is ever more important, imo.

The gods are metaphors in the sense that they are not what they appear to be, they are infinitely larger, more complex entities that are made comprehensible through their depiction as human.

The only way to find out if it's a metaphor or not is to look down a god's pants (or up his kilt/robe depending on the culture). But I don't think they'd like that very much.

hi
well based on the myth of Osiris mentioned above; we have to remember how the people thought of their gods. some greek philosophers thought gods were once men, other thought the gods were immortal, the egyptians saw them as mortal. the myth of osiris i believe is found in Plutarch and Diodorus Siculus, not an egyptian source though as far as i know there is no reason to dismiss the myth altogther.

Aset (Isis) made Wesir (Osiris) a new phallus, she was mistress of magic this essentially became a new one. so regeneration was unneccesary though the topic of phallus regeneration is indeed one rarely discussed. the reason with the phallus is typical of all agricultural myths, Osiris was vegetation regrowth and so the phallus is the metaphor for this to understand this may i quote from another myth a creation myth from egypt when Atum masturbated to create the world; the reason i mention this is that the phallus is a creative power.

but then again surely such an agricultural myth would need some regeneration of the phallus yet in our egyptian example it is not neccesary, thank you for bringing an interesting topic to my attention.

blessings to you

Nebhotep

One Egyptian myth has Isis making a new phallus for Osiris, but that's it...
