Yup! I agree Moonburn33. You really need to be centered in order to balance a sword on your head whilst isolating a shimmy (and thats the basic technique!). Though when spinning, you over correct at the end with the sword (follow through to the body) then you center to cancel out the momentum.

(To: general board)
What centering/ physical balance techniques help you in moving meditations?

I like to do it with people & not inanimate objects.

I had Ross(7) standing on my shoulders & we were passing Gregor(2) up to stand on his shoulders when we were nearly chucked out of the swimming pool. This year will be Gregors year & I can't wait to hit the beach.

Kids are here to help you & keep you grounded & centred naturally,if you listen to them.

I noticed in the interview with the Canadian Belly dancer she has a wee problem with her throat chakra(same as my wife co-incidentaly).

I believe that this flows from a blockage in the heart chakra, which may in turn affect Kundalini Spirit flowing naturally up to the & through the crown(and way beyond).

Another cause is words unspoken sticking in her throat, which is accompanied by chest pain as the heart is shocked before the words stick there. All can be broken down naturally,of course,if she can allow herself to become*vessel*,which involves letting down her *protective shield* caused by earlier damage, this being the root problem/blockage which can also be removed.

I love that wee guy on the beach, the flying bumbalini's will fly this summer!

He uses the power lines too,the most intense being a kinda swastika shape once you master the *lightening strike* power lines.

I must admit I was a little confused by your meaning in your last post DarkWater so please bear with my interpretation

I donâ??t use the sword to try to center. Dancing with Swords is part of Bellydancing skills, just like dancing with Canes, vales and other object. However, with each one of these tools, your dancing needs to adapt and you center of gravity as well as your emotional center changes and needs to be adjusted. The latter means that the interpretation of your dance may change with the use of these tools, or movements may be altered, subdued or

Personally I donâ??t like randomly flinging my sword around. I am trying to build my knowledge so the movements are not pure interpretation but also have a degree of practical application as well, I discovered that certain moves (wrt martial arts) are more appropriate to certain emotions and hence to particular dances.

Since Bellydance is a dance of emotion, how can you interpret this further in terms of Charkras? Perhaps from your martial arts perspective?

Love is missing,the heart chakra(maybe).

I somehow got the impression we were balancing swords on our heads.doh.

I have worked with knives in *dance*,the heaven 7 & another one I forget the name of.Also love the exchange of energy known as hu-bud,yu-bud & all the moves which flow naturally

I used to belly dance and after reading this thread, I am excited to start doing so again. Dance is believed to be man's first communion with the powers that be. A great book to read on this subject is Sacred Women, Sacred Dance: Awakening Spirituality Through Movement and Ritual by Iris J Stewart.

I remember when I first started belly danceing how long it took before I could move different parts of my body independent of one another. In fact I know I will start belly dancing again in order to help losen myself up in the shoulders and hips as I have been finding my yoga practice to be a bit difficult lately.

I like what Durki said: Belly-dancing is effective in that it (1) activates psychic centres or chakras, (2) transforms sexual energy into higher energies and (3) awakens kundalini.

What better reason to start dancing again. Thanks!

Dark Water, belly dancers are not gogo girls. It is a respected art form. While some strippers might learn to belly dance, any dancer that hope to have any respect in the belly dance community keep their clothes on and protect their decency. Belly dancers are sensual, not erotic!

In the belly dance community there are much controversy about the Spirituality of belly dance. Some dancers feel that is it very Spiritual, others feel that that just add unnecessary and untrue drama to the dance, that it is just an dance. Many also feel that the whole Goddess thing is misleading as men to dance belly dance and when one call it the dance of the Goddess it adds to the discriminating of male dancers.

I however feel the dance to be deeply Spiritual, and that it can be used in ritual for powerful effect. It is also excellent for the body as young or old, well trained or not, it will fit ones fitness needs. Many pepole whit damaged bodies have danced their way back to health.

I do feel belly dance to be magickal. It is why I got interested in it, it have a mystery and a grace and it is truly Devinne, and Energy flow through it, just like whit Tai Chi and such things.

Andy, I believe you might appreciate the influence of Martial Arts, particularly Kung Fu, in one of the videos I will post a little later.
Actually at least one belly dance style, shaidi (I am not sure about correct spelling) basically is a Martial Art. When an African nation was invaded, the inhabitants was forbidden to have weapons, but none could take the Shepperd's staff from a sheep farmer, and so a sort of dance and a fighting style developed from the use of that staff.

Never a promise, a hint. A belly dancer do not promise herself to those that see her dance, she is a sensual creature, a fantasy woman they can not have, it is about sensuality, not sexuality. That being said, belly dance is not reserved for the young and beautiful, women of any age from small girls to old women and all looks and sizes dance belly dance and many men dance to. The dance is a celebration of the beauty of the human body and soul more than anything else.
