How secure is this website?
How secure is this website?
I'd like to know from a moderator or site admin, how secure is this website?
Taking a quick look at the script, it seems quite simplistic, and I noticed there was very little security during sign-up and login.
Would anyone be able to inform me of what type of protective measures, if any, are set up to protect personal information, and other server-side content?
I'm simply cautious with my personal data. Any help on this subject would be much appreciated.

Re: How secure is this website?
Why, you planning to hack in and crash the site?
Re: How secure is this website?
That wasn't really a plan, but I'm sure with a few google searches I'll be able to.
Is you personal information not important to you?

Just don't put any personal information on the site?

Re: How secure is this website?
Well, considering you need an email and password to sign up, you're a little late.
Not to mention this is a forum for contacting like-minded people, it's almost nothing but people's personal info.
However, I'd like to have at least some minor assurance that my email will at least be safe.
Depending on their goals and their methods, someone could do a lot with an email. Especially when it connects across multiple accounts and websites.

Re: How secure is this website?
Well you always have the option to create new dummy e-mail and ask the administrators nicely to change it [smile]
But password-wise, if you use the same password for more than one website, you have already done enough to compromise your privacy. Just sayin'. It is more a question of do you have any private information that can be useful for someone, and what is the probability of someone hacking this forum.
If you ask me, pretty darn low.

Re: How secure is this website?
You are on a website populated by occultists. Mystics and Magicians, Mediums, Seers and Shamans, Psychics of all types. People who, to varying degrees of accuracy and skill, can read your fate -- or change it. People who, to varying degrees of accuracy and skill, can hear your thoughts or feel your heart just as you do. People who, to varying degrees of accuracy and skill, can look into the depths of your very soul and understand your true nature, even the parts of yourself that you are blind to.
And surrounded by this environment, and these people, you are sincerely concerned about the secrecy of...
...your email address?
Okay, then. [thumbup]

This site is as vulnerable as any other message board. As long as you sign up with different password than your email account (which you should ALWAYS do) there is no issue.

Re: How secure is this website?
Simple security of my email is not the only thing I'm concerned about. Others who should not have my email, that indeed have access to it, is more along the lines of my worry.
And though some of the people among these websites can alter their own fate and reality as easily as blinking their eyes, I trust that no one is the master of my own fate but fate itself. I have more power over everything in my surroundings than any human has shown to have over my person.
Not to mention, it takes significantly more work to influence someone using mere text on the internet, than in would having a direct line to them.
Let me borrow one of your guys' main email address accounts, and by the end of the week, tell me if you regret your choice in giving it over blindly.
You also misunderstand, in that it is not only my email I'm concerned about, but all of the information I've decided to share, and the information you all have shared as well.
I take concern for others' security when they will not do so themselves.
If someone were to get a hold of my email, they could, first and foremost, find out any account on the internet it connects to.
Depending on what types of websites you subscribe to, facebook, tumblr, instagram, etc., they then have a wealth of your personal information to do with as they please.
Pictures of you and your surroundings, your friends and family, what you do on a daily basis, what information you divulge in.
From there, they can trace the IP that most frequently uses the email, based on information from various websites, to give them a near-exact location of your position on this earth.
And being that obviously none of you are likely to use a proxy or VPN when searching the internet, all of this information is readily up for the grabbing.
From what little information an email gives, there is more than enough for limitless malicious activity to occur.
Just keep this in mind.
Especially with a website the nature of this one.
We're here readily sharing secrets that have been attempted to be kept hidden. Some for upwards of thousands of years.
For those who would not agree with the awakening of the subconscious, I can almost guarantee information posted to this website is searched down with vigilant scrutiny to separate the idiots from the truly knowledgeable, put those they deem such into a little search category where they find out everything about you, and then add it to the rest of the information they already have about everything you are.
Maybe a specific government comes to mind.
The fact that you all are so willing to dismiss my concern for security, regardless of the precautions I have or have not taken ahead of time, simply shows to me that you are just as careless with your personal info over the internet, as you likely are in reality.
Or you simply don't care.
Either case is not something to be lived with.
P.S. I know of very few message board that I use regularly that have low-end security. This website is a lot more vulnerable than most message boards.
Many good forums write in code for various hack-prevention methods into the HTML of their websites.
P.P.S. I have too many email addresses to count, and they all have specific purposes. Sometimes I happen to use my primary business account for topics that concern me, such as this website.

Re: How secure is this website?
I have a separate email account I use for occult/spiritual matters, disconnected from my regular email and any accounts on other websites. Could a really determined person still connect the dots and track me? Sure, probably. But I don't see why they would. At the end of the day, I don't have much to hide. That isn't to say I don't value people's right to privacy - I do. But this isn't a forum for discussing radical politics or illegal activity - I just don't think there's anyone out to get us for discussing the occult online.

Re: How secure is this website?
I agree with Rin. If you want to be paranoid partition your email life. Beyond that the only thing you have to fear is the personal things you post when you weren't thinking straight. Facebook is worse for that.
Re: How secure is this website?
Perhaps for some people, but not to most. Your very presence here is a direct line to you. No practitioner that I know personally needs anything personal -- not your email address, not your "real" name, not your location, not a hair strand or drop of blood. All of that stuff is just a medium for more subtle things, and those who are sensitive to the more subtle things have no need of the mediums.Haelos wrote:Not to mention, it takes significantly more work to influence someone using mere text on the internet, than in would having a direct line to them.
Just sayin'.
Oh, but I'm a very reserved person, and quite an eccentric person. And precisely because I am such a person, I am very careful with what I share. I have no need to be afraid for sharing the information I share here, because I simply do not share anything I should not. It's really not that difficult.Haelos wrote:You also misunderstand, in that it is not only my email I'm concerned about, but all of the information I've decided to share, and the information you all have shared as well. Absolutely nothing on this website, aside from personal experience, is a great mystical secret. Nor has it been for a very long time. All of the lesser mysteries have long been published, they're just not all in the same place or in the same language, and some are more difficult to get hold of than others.Haelos wrote:Especially with a website the nature of this one.

"These mysteries will always remain hidden from incompetent persons, though hundreds of books should be published about them." -- Franz Bardon, Step Eight of Initiation Into Hermetics.
I'm not really worried about governments, with everything else that floats around in the world. Empires rise and fall all the time.Haelos wrote:Maybe a specific government comes to mind.

Your concern for security seems rooted in the singular worry over using your personal email account on this forum. The solution to such a concern is simple, and everyone here has offered it kindly: do not use your personal email account on this forum. Then you won't worry about it.
I've spent a fair amount of time around Computer Science guys. I know all about security issues, and I'm far from careless. But I've also learned from them that nothing on the internet is really secure in the first place, no matter how a website is built, so instead of worrying over what I have shared I simply learned to choose what I share. It's simple, and I am at peace, living with my decision quite nicely.
Life is simple. People complicate it.

Significantly more work because of mere text? The text has nothing to do with. You've put more than enough of yourself into, especially, that last post - that anyone with a spark of 'distance' Talent doesn't need anything else.
What I don't know if you realize is that the online occult community is a real community. Friendships and acquaintances and enemies, too, are made. These span across a multitude of websites.
If you're that concerned then look for a more secure forum to hang out on. No one is forcing you to be here.
and all these mysteries? Please. Those conversations aren't held in public.
If you're that concerned with security and safety then why the hell are you using your business email?

What's already been posted. [thumbup]
And yes, we do have security measures here, but am I going to discuss them here on the open forum?
Not likely.
If you want to know more I suggest you pm or mail Vashta and he will share with you whatever information he feels is appropriate. [grin]
