The spells have never worked for me since I was a kid. Sum1 once told me, since 14 we don't have the same connection with the Universe as until 14 so kids r able 2do spells, grown ups need to undergo initiations practical training with teacher n stuff. Individuals might become real magicians (not 2 say wander-workers).
The reason why I keep doing rituals is solely the need for theurgy and trying 2 reconnect to Creator.

Re: the spells
Children do have a stronger connection to Nature, but there's nothing magical about the age of fourteen (except the patience of parents). Children lose their innocence and purity when they are exposed to and trained in the ways of society -- walking certain ways, talking certain ways, eating certain ways, and dealing with people in certain ways that are all unnatural and sometimes downright destructive.
As for spells, one thing I will stand by firmly is that ritual magic, even initiatic ritual magic, is not a good practice for a beginner. A spell has several elements, depending on its nature. An herbal or alchemical tincture uses the natural Qualities in plants and the like, blending things together to make something else. An Incantation uses the Power of Formulas and Words, blending together universal forces and individual words to bend the web of reality. A ritual uses the natural meaning and power of all the tools and items present, including circles and talismans, to let those external things anchor and lead the Power of the spell.
All of these things are important, and there are many other forms of Spell Craft, but all of them have one thing in common: no matter how powerful your spell is, the actual Power that activates it comes from within the spell caster. I can share with you amazing Incantations that do amazing things, and spoken from your lips they will do nothing. A good spell is like a good Arrow and Bow -- the arrow may be sharp and the bow strong, but you still must be able to pull back the string and aim.
The remedy for this is overwhelming simple, though.
Practice. Meditate to discipline and sharpen your mind, do breathing exercises to purify your body and awaken the internal energies within you, and do everything at every turn to discipline and improve yourself. These things are the Calisthenics of Magic. No matter how good your spells are, they are useless without the internal power necessary to fire them off. It has nothing to do with the universe disowning you at age fourteen, and everything to do with your own nature and strengths. Try something like Initiation Into Hermetics, The One Year Manual, Modern Magick or any other training manual if you do not know where to start. I posted the first draft of a small treatise I'm working on myself recently. But whatever you do, practice. Develop yourself, and your magic will develop with you.
