To pass through their land without accost (and for their cooperation and equipment) - the Dwarf King promised the towns folk riches and flowing wealth. In hope of prosperity, the Villagers agreed. But when the Company of Dwarves went down into the Hallowed Halls of Stone - to take back the Gold from the Earth that they believed to be their birthright - they awoke the Dragon and brought desolation by fire and brimstone upon the people of the town! Nor did the Dwarf King keep his word once the Dragon was slain and the Hoard of Treasure reclaimed...For the gold was cursed.
