The Hanging Man is a historical representation of the 4000 years that the fallen watcher named Shemyhaza was hanging in a dark tunnel whilst in the angel prison - Tartarus.

He is free now along with another 2 fallen watchers who have rebelled. One of which was caught on a CCTV at a gas station in Ohio in 2007. It is still viewable on Youtube.

I didn't have time to read through the whole thread, sorry if this was ready brought up.

Does it tie in with the birth and rebirth theme in the magician?
I'm not so familiar with the Hanged Man, but the Tau Cross has a couple symbolic meanings for esoteric Christianity. The first is the pole on which Moses raised the fiery Serpent:

And the second deals with Christ's triple-fixation on the cross:

Taking these into account, I'd say it does have something to do with the death and rebirth of the magician, which is another way of looking at the process of alchemical Sublimation.

From the perspective of a True and Free stone mason, it has a lot to do with the fixation of Spirit Mundi via the three principles of Hermetic philosophy. Christ's left hand represents the Moon, his right the Sun, and the feet (usually seen with one nail through both, unlike the above image) represent the spiritual Earth -- i.e. the central salt, or antimonial Earth. The feet or the 'foundation on which we stand' (spiritually) could also be seen as composing part of V.I.T.R.I.O.L. "Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem"

visit the interior of the earth, rectify, and you shall find the hidden stone.

In my opinion, it is a symbolic reference to this part of the Emerald Tablet of Hermes:
Separate the earth from the fire, so you will attain the subtle as more inherent than the gross, with care and sagacity.
It rises from earth to heaven, so as to draw the lights of the heights to itself, and descends to the earth; thus within it are the forces of the above and the below;
because the light of lights is within it, thus does the darkness flee before it.
Free yourself from the seduction of words.
