I'm looking for a specific kind of music which I can't seem to find very much of but I find it excellent for lulling myself into a trance. If any of you are familiar with Magick Mother Invocation by Gong (if not then definitely give it a listen) that's exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for. The problem with MMI is that part way through the song the beat picks up and the song changes form. Only the first two minutes of it are any good for my purposes. The background droning and the general atmosphere of it are excellent. Does anyone know of any good music that is similar in nature to the first part of MMI?

I really like the Heavenly Music Corporation by Fripp and Eno for meditation purposes. Almost anything by Eno would work. Another good one by him is Music for Airports. If you are looking for a simple drone or something like that, try almost anything labeled ambient in the electronica genre. I highly recommend Collected Ambient Works by Aphex Twin. The downside to this CD is that it is a very dark and sinister kind of vibe. The good part is that only one or two songs have a beat, out of 20 or 30 songs.

Also, have you ever just tried New Age nature sound CD's? They often have a sort of droning tone in the background. Much less sinister than Aphex Twin.

Also, I really liked the Krishna Das that my yoga teacher plays in the background of our yoga class. It is somewhat rhythmic, but not heavily so. Oh, and I also like the Peter Gabriel soundtrack for The Last Temptation of Christ. That is called Passion, don't get it confused with the Mel Gibson movie.

Also, whenever I used to set up my altar, I would play Lateralus by Tool. By the time I got all the tools together and everything arranged, I would usually be finished with the song Lateralus, (I am obsessive about setting up an altar) at which point I would turn the music off and do my ritual. Often afterwards I would use the resume feature on my CD and listen to the last few songs after the ritual and sort of pick up the house, and clean off the altar.

I don't particularly like doing intense meditation and ritual work with music on, unless I am playing it myself, mostly because I think the recording tends to bring in mixed energies that aren't really appropriate. Somehow the artist seems to leave the stamp of their personality on the recording, and generally, I don't want them invited to my personal space. I also like to be able to hear my breathing and my heart beat when I finish a yoga session, and this requires a lot of silence. However, I do listen to music almost all day, and I do use it to set mood. I just like my meditation to be quiet time. Do what works best for you though.

I could probably recommend a bunch more CD's, so if that doesn't do the trick, let me know and I will leave some more.

My advice is Trance music. The constant rhythem is rarely distracting and it's easy to loose yourself... don't feel compelled to sitstill either if you wish to move to the music do it.loose yourself in it.

Theta Meditation System with headphones. It really is as good as it's made out to be. Not only is it binaural hidden in the music so you don't actually hear anything out of the ordinary, but the music itself is an enjoyable non-distraction. It's impossible to listen to it and not trance out almost immediately. Unlike LVSPA's comment, TMS actually enhances meditation. You're supposed to be able to meditate anywhere during anything, so music is not counterproductive to meditation. Especially THIS kind of music, which is more like rolling tones in outer space. The Awakened Mind System is also quite good. Both of these got me into checking out something called "space music" but I found it wasn't nearly as good as the Theta Meditation System. As far as the "space music" stuff goes, you only need the mp3's off John Serrie's website-- and even then not all of them (throw away the stuff with strings and drums and just keep the ambient space stuff).

Actually - At the height of my meditation practice - Was listening to hardcore/screamo stuff while meditating, and not being affected by the vibes. It's good practice, and it deepened my meditational state.
