I once read a book called Opening to Channel by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer which talked about how to connect with guides, I think they mean all helpful ones, so I am thinking this would mean guardian angel too.
It covers tuning into life-force energy and high level guides etc etc.
An easy read.

If your talking about the CM style HGA... not quite sure. If you mean the angel/angles assigned to care for you... they arn't real talkative. They will hear and respond, but that's about it. Your guide (some people have more than one) is the most likely to have a conversation with. I've come across mine while out of body, and hear them speak from time to time. I think the first big step is letting them know your interested in meeting them, and proving to yourself and them that you wont be too freaked out by it. I think that last point is one that's often overlooked...but it's a big one. You have to be ruthless, bold, sincere, and able to keep a fairly cool head. Mine pulled me OB when I was ready, or rather when It appeared that I was ready. I was still pretty shaken up by the experience.

Adding a little to Serpentiferous' post:
I first made contact with my guiding entities through the LBRP, they don't intrude, but if you are sincere in wanting to move forward with them, they are dead keen.
If I had to list the 'how' of it, it would be like this:
a) Sincerely want to connect
b) Do a meditation, ritual or similar to create the conditions most likely to foster the relationship
c) Discard nothing and note all that happens, be open to it
It is basically about expanding your consciousness
