Until I gather my thoughts on this vast subject, here is a short intro into my personal history and view of the topic:
I began Belly Dancing 4 or 5 years ago. It was on and off due to various circumstances. I moved schools this year and thank Eris I didâ?¦ My previous school was akin to the westerners version of Chinese foodâ?¦.*no comparison* My new school focuses on the differences in the different traditions, the history, modern interpretation. the biological factors, the emotion and letting go.
Belly dance is not about telling a story, rather it is a dance of emotionsâ?¦either you dance the emotions elicited by the music or you dance the emotions you felt coming in and you find its place in the music playing.
For many reasons I struggle with medicationâ?¦or at least with keeping still. Belly dance is a moving meditation of sortsâ?¦ It helps me get in touch with parts of myself that I often intellectualize away, It links me to the earth and its energy, Itâ??s powerful and engulfing.
It is physically toughâ?¦ I have done a few months of Kung Fu (Si Fu is a mean man) and I am more tired after 2 hours of BF than a 3 hour combo of sparing and Kung Fuâ?¦
Far from the blitzy and gaudy portrayal of many modern dancers.
Magickaly speaking, I find Belly dance to be invaluable and dynamic. And at times terrifyingly powerful. A power that stems from both feminine and masculine sources.
With it I enter a state in which is both fluid and tangible. I cant wait to learn and apply it to more Magickal practices!

I agree that bellydancing has a very powerful type of magick related to it.

I love the gogo's too.
Saw my first one aged 14,before a football match in a pub in Edinburgh.....life was never the same again....
With daemonn all around the babe feeding off of her silent fears she danced her dance with indifference, kicking off her G string too land at my feet.
ET,I refuse to believe you enjoy watching bellydancers yet would refuse to have your cherry popped by one?

ROFL @ the dynamic between you two, thread to thread.
I know belly dancing is hypnotizing, from the viewer's perspective. Indeed does seem to have some type of magical power and energy to it.

Belly Dancers are not Prostitutes. There is a slight but significant difference between the power of sensuality and sexuality.

Belly Dance is a tool to channel energy. Alternitively it helps you get into a mindframe where you can tap into a multitude of energies that you wouldnt be able to do so in a 'waking state' or at least not as easily'.
One of the most popwerful that I am aware of is called Trance Dance. Something I have seen done but I have a lot left to learn before I can master it. I have seen an audience be pulled into a trance dance,,, almost suspending external reality for its duration. Amazing to watch when it is done properly.

Your words paraphrased. Your intentions are clear enough.
But since you are so fond of the topic...
Bellydance is often called the dance of fertility. Most people interpret this as a woman wriggling around to attract a bearer of seed.
The reality is rather different. Far back in history, pregnancy carried with it a high risk of fatality. Belly dancing originated as a way for women to strengthen their birthing muscles and to prepare them for the actual birth. In addition, it brought the local woman community together, where older women where able to pass on their knowledge to younger women. Eventually the dance itself took on a life of its own and began to represent something that is unique to women; giving and surviving birth. Feminine strength and power of protecting her own. This expanded to all aspects of womenâ?¦including the incorporation of the warrior archetype.
I believe that Belly dance has in the past, but more so today, crossed the male female definition. Sex is constant, gender is not. It helps women get inside with sides of themselves that much of the world terms as masculine (and thus off limits to women), helping them become more in touch with who they are as a whole rather than with what one or other society wants them to be . Itâ??s a dance of self discovery.

I was just trying to keep ET's attention upon the subject,I have never associated with a prostitute nor am I ever likely too.
I have only ever seen Kali dance in a healing temple in Astral which was most relaxing,a great expression of female beauty and I would agree that the divine sphere is touched when watching, even moreso(probably, being male) if you participate.
The last thing I would ever do is steer ET towards a prostitute,if only because of the IV drugs which go hand in hand with the oldest trade in the book.
I would apologise to you for any concern caused to you by mis-interpretation of my perceived*intent*.

This is a good example of the "subtle" effects of bellydancing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYtTJhj4V2Q
I had a magically inclined friend who was a stripper. She used her bellydancing and magic to make 300 bucks a night. At some hole in the wall strip club.
I remember her telling a story about how she got payed 50$ to kiss a guy (no tongue or anything).
Powerful stuff.

Maybe feels she cannot be enjoyed just for her beautiful expression alone, fearful or wary of the beings who empower her.Maybe just vanity?

I enjoy bellydancing. What I loved the most was the instructor She said that every woman is a Goddess and that no matter what one looks like she is beautiful. She said this throughout the term and by the end I noticed the self esteem of the ladies in the class had jumped dramatically.
When I dance especially a slow rhythmic number I feel the energy course through me, to me and from me. I feel strong and powerful. I love it!

Your bellydance teacher sounds very wise.Any other useful stuff you managed to absorb from her?

Ooo I see I have got the Mysterious thing going already, Ive already got you pondering Darkwater :p
In bellydance you could vamp off your audience. But I prefer to either channel my personal energy, earth energy or random energy thatâ??s just floating around. People are too easy to vamp off.
Nakibeam, Are there any particular dance styles you are drawn to?
Nice video Moonburn33 thanks!
I was particularly impressed by the isolation in the following video:

Andy, I believe you might appreciate the influence of Martial Arts, particularly Kung Fu, in one of the videos I will post a little later.

Belly-dancing is effective in that it
(1) activates psychic centres or chakras,
(2) transforms sexual energy into higher energies and
(3) awakens kundalini.

Actually Andy, its not that off topic. Furis has been training in Kung Fu for 8 years or so. After watching me practice and vice versa, we came to realize that many of the key principles are the same, particularly the use of core muscles. (Others include something as simple as where you look when you are striking or executing a particular move).
A big difference is the positioning of the hips. In belly dancing the hips are centered but a little to the back in many of the typical resting stance In Kung Fu the hips are centered but a little bit forward in many resting stances. But being able to balance in both variations helped me in my dancing and helped Furis in his forms.
Here is the link I mentioned earlier:
Isidora Bushkovski - Sword Dance:

This next video is not a Belly dance. I was looking for practical sword movements which can be incorporated into belly dancing... I found this fascinating.

In the second video, do you see how she brings the hilt of the sword back to her center of gravity? Aim for that. It gives you more poise.
