Delpi served as the spiritial centre of Greece for than 2000 years. The Pythias (priestesses) played a fundermental role in the

oracles of Delpi. They were said to have the power to commune with the invisable world and to spesk on behalf of the god, Apollo.

The temple of Delphi exerted a tremendous influence in antiquity not only because of the oracles; it also housed a prestigios

mystery school. Above the portal of the temple of Apollo in Delpi was inscribed in the injunction, "Know Thyself". Thats What I'm

trying to do understand the knowledge of self.

I has a story as well. My relative's dear friend used to collect rocks or stones around the world. Two pieces of rock came from Olympia and Delphi which I guess he pocketed in 70s. I'm not sure if this is connected with Delphic oracles but I did have a dream where I met a woman carrying a miniature woman on her belly. I was asking this woman questions and she spoke in a very loud booming voice. When I woke up I actually didn't think of Delphic oracles at all, til I realised I had totally forgotten that a couple of days before I had put one of the rocks under my pillow.

I am very happy to read this article about one of the most powerful places in the world...Delphi became the site of a major temple to Phoebus Apollo, as well as the Pythian Games and the famous prehistoric oracle. Even in Roman times, hundreds of votive statues remained, described by Pliny the Younger and seen by Pausanias. Supposedly carved into the temple were three phrases: γνῶθι σεαυτόν (gnōthi seautón = "know thyself") and μηδέν άγαν (mēdén ágan = "nothing in excess"), and Ἑγγύα πάρα δ'ἄτη (engýa pára d'atē = "make a pledge and mischief is nigh"),as well as a large letter E which might reffer to ομάς έψιλον or e-team...Delphi are cosidered to be the most sacred spot in Greece !!!!!!!

Does that mean something like: If you take an oath you're likely to break it?

Or is it talking more about making promises?

"I promise, we'll go to the zoo before summer vacation is over."

You may be right. It may also refer to the challenges one faces trying to live up to the oath. I tried running the phrase through a number of dictionaries, but kept getting error messages due to the script. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I share your reverence and [pray] strongly hope to visit Delphi in the future. The mighty Apollo far striker has shown me kindness and I offer sacrifices to him with a measure of regularity.
