my spells don't work, etc.

Do what thou Wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
i am a practicing magician for years now and i see the stuff like what is in these posts all the time. in fact, i was one of the biggest supporters of finding proof scientifically.
so now, i have a strong urge to help everyone else who is fighting this struggle as well.
why do you need to prove magick? are you validating to yourself? are you validating it to someone else so that they can reassure you that "it's real"? i don't blame you. as a ceremonial magician, i say to always use the scientific method. even when i call something up, i don't trust my senses. if i see a wobbly glow in my incense smoke, is it coming from a street lamp outside the temple? i've been a magician for a long time and i've gotten good. but even still, i don't trust other peoples experiences. i could tell you some amazing experiences that i've had... but that does you no more good than reading a harry potter book and nodding to yourself on the validity of magick. the point of practicing is to gain your own experiences.
if i wanted to believe in the validity of chemistry i wouldn't just break into a lab, throw together some chemicals, and then give up on chemistry when i get no flash or smoke. i would have to take the time to learn my periodic table, study not only molecules, but how and why those molecules form. and then, of course, i would try to get reactions. i would also understand at this point that flash and smoke isn't always important... sometimes the most imperceptible changes are the most important.
also, take this into consideration. how open is your mind? you might have the knee jerk reaction and say "oh, very open!" yet if you called on an angel and were flooded with it's raw archetypal power and saw before you a fully materialized angel... you might not be able to comprehend. i am pretty sure that there are natural safe guards in the universe/ your mind, that prevent you from having your reality shattered to the point of no repair. in enochian magick we call them a "ring-pass-not"... basically they are gates that are guarded until you are ready. do they suck? you betcha. but just as much as a 12 year old thinks his dad sucks for not letting him design napalm bombs in the back yard.
i say all the above to say this. waving a blue candle three times in the north while burning sage and frankincense may be a spell... but what good does that do you? about as much good as a chemistry lab book would. when you are doing a spell, you are using tools to change your mindset which will in turn cause a change in the universe. as above, so below and all that. in the above ritual... know why you use a blue candle. what does blue mean to you? would any other color work better? why face north? what does that mean to you? now what is the combination of north meanings with blue candle meaning mean? why burn those incenses? etc, etc.
once you know the meaning behind what you are doing, you can begin to create what you want. you can (and do) create when you don't know what you're doing as well... kind of like russian roulette though...
tips... when you do a spell, forget about it. it's a done deal. the more you think about it, the more you begin to change it. when you begin doubting the spell you've done... you just destroyed it.
don't do love spells. i can't stress this enough. don't do anything that goes against some one else's will. grow up before you get yourself hurt... badly.
every spell that you do works. but how much or how well it works depends on your understanding.
and finally... the blue candle is just a freaking candle. but in your mind it is something more because it has meaning. the candle isn't the real magickal tool... it's what the candle does inside your mind that creates the magick.
Love is the Law, love under Will.
