Fellow occultists,

If you could offer a few words of advice to a beginner in the occult arts, what would these words be?

Keep an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out.

Critical thinking, if something seems strange, trust your instincts and cross reference often.

Opinions are subjective but facts, however, are not.

Ask questions and listen as well as you talk.

Don't worry about causality, just practice and experience.
Find a method of meditation that works for you, because not everyone can just empty their minds, but every magician needs to reflect.
Consider the consequences of magical actions.

It took me a while to come up with a reply.

Watch out if you gain the ability to see energy. You will hear a voice that sounds something like "before this day is out you will be begging me to kill you". Remember to have no FEAR. Do not let the CLARITY of the situation make you hallucinate things that arn't happening. When POWER happens and you absorb too much you will need a respite to let it drain away. The trick is to absorb the right amount of POWER per Day. Also watch out for OLD AGE. Think about Death often and leave DAATH alone when you are a novice.

If you do end up in DAATH do something drastic or you could die. Equalize the elements OR AFTER THAT THERE WILL BE NO MORE DUCKS!

Do not lose yourself.

Question everything, assume nothing

try to see what other people can't see....try to listen where others,can't.Be frank with your self and always give your 100% of your energy in everything you do...faith,passion,patience,visualization and balance are the keys to success !!!! Set your self free to feel the vibrations of the universe !!!!

Good things come to those who Believe, Better things come to those who are Patient and
the best Things come to those who Don't Give up.

Find a teacher who comes as close as possible to knowing what you want to know, doing what you want to do and living how you want to live, then study under them. Don't waste your time blowing cash on hundreds of contradictory books from Borders or Dymocks or your local New Age bookstore. Very few people get anywhere serious with these practices by book study.

Keep reason and intuition balanced

Do not shackle yourself to the dogmas of Belief. All the gods are real, all the myths are true. It's just a matter of context and wisdom, and at the end of the day, something simply either is or it isn't - and the thing that is doesn't give a damn whether or not you believe in it.
