Building FAQ Pt. 1: Ask your questions.

by Stukov
I am working on a FAQ for the beginner section. I am slowly going through all the topics in this forum and breaking them down and summarizing them into short questions and answers. If you have questions that you think are good or simply want answered (will do my best to find an answer for them) just asking him here and I will add them to the list of questions. Try to keep questions brief and too the point if you can. They can also be questions you have previously asked and have been answered or just new ones.

After getting as many questions/answers as I can I will start to organize them by topic, for now they are just in whatever order I find them or they are asked.

Q: How do I know a spirit/demon/angel/god is who they claim to be?
A: You don't, there is no "ID" system for the other realms.

Q: What is a demon?
A: The simplest answer is a spirit, however it was during the rise of Christianity that led to all non-biblical spirits to given the "demonization" of a demon - with the connotation of bad, evil, or malevolent.

Q: How do I invoke/evoke a demon/angel/spirit/god?
A: Firstly invoke and evoke are completely different things evocation is summoning an entity outside of you and invocation is summoning an entity inside of you. You can use ritual, spells, or willpower. Search for a specific school or thought to find specific answer.

Q: How do I get a demon to help me accomplish something I want?
A: Firstly you must understand what a demon is, once you have established this understanding, you can try to look for spirits that have been known in the past to accomplish your desired task, and one with a track record of keeping their deals. This is important because most individuals don't work for free, if you are going to make a deal you want to make sure the other party keeps up their end of the bargain and limits the unwanted side effects. Be very specific with your request (see movie Bedazzled). After selecting your helper/bargainer, you then find a method that has been known to successful contact the spirit, then present it with your deal (have payment ready), and wait and see what happens. Be sure to research methods that do not offend the spirit you are calling upon, as they may accept your deal and screw you as a way of getting back.

Q: Is it safe to work with demons? Aren't demons powerful and dangerous?
A: First see this info about demons to understand them better. Since demons is such a broad category filled with all sorts of entities, the answer is both yes and no. Some beings are benevolent some are malevolent. Some are impartial, some just don't give a fuck (like the honey badger). Some are mischievous, some are careful. Given the spectrum of attributes and personalities, it is best to first understand who you are dealing with, then try to understand them. Most entities are not much different than people, they may just have different priorities, the manner in which they perceive things, and ways of thinking. Most will respect you more if you try to understand them, while others only respect strength. Powerful is a matter of perspective and degrees. To an ant, a frog is mighty. To a frog, an eagle is mighty. Ignorance is dangerous, it does not change when dealing with other entities.

Q: What does the pentagram/inverted pentagram symbolize?

Q: What are the Left Hand Path/Right Hand Path?

Q: Do people really believe in Lovecraft's creations?

Q: Is Cthulu/Necronomicon real?

Q: What sort of offering can be given to a fire elemental?
A: Several suggestions may be items that have been changed by fire (fired clay), created by "fire" such as Igneous or metamorphic rocks (obsidian), sulfur, rubies, or something of an animal that is related to fire (fox/tiger/dragon/etc).

Q: Can you finish an incomplete spell?
A: Best answer at the moment it depends on what was being done, the nature of the spell, and how much time has past.

Q: Do evokers used charged objects (such as jewelery, trinkets, clothing, etc) increase their chance of success?
A: Some objects give a placebo effect, while other objects can focus a link (owned object of a person deceased) or access across the veil more readily. Objects have their own energy and can be imbued with additional energy by proximity or by purpose. Using these objects can be equally beneficial and malignant depending on what they are attempted to be used for and what energy the object has. Short answer, it depends.

Q: What makes the best materials for ritual?
A: Complicated open question, but ultimately it would either be an object/material that energizes the practitioner with needed energy they need but lack or are unable to easily call upon or an object imbued (naturally or artificially) with the properties necessary to complete the ritual (such as fire in flame spells). There are many theories for how rituals work and given this variety each school may give a different answer for what is best and why it is so.

Q: Where to start?
A: Common question to newcomers on this board. Ultimately it depends on your background, what you want to be able to do, how you want to do it, and why you want to do. If you can answer these questions in any query you have, most board members (when around) should be able to point you in a direction even if they are not seasoned in that particular path.

Q: Wands, does the material used or how it is constructed matter to whether I should get or not get a particular wand?
A: Best answer, think Harry Potter - take whatever wand seems to be calling out to you - one reason or another, it may likely be the wand that will be best suited for you regardless of its material or construction.

Q: Can a sigil be used to affect others?
A: Yes.

Q: How does magick work?
A: Different magick works in different ways, more specific questions are required to give more specific answers.

Q: Can magick change reality as in the physical environment, or does it just shift perceptions?
A: Yes and yes. It can change the reality of the physical environment when given a medium in which to interact and it can also change perception. This doesn't mean both always happen. One must always separate what is possible with what is probable so one can distinguish coincidence, correlation, and causation (which is part of scientific empirical thought).

Q: Can others be affected by your spells?
A: Yes, it is possible.

Q: Is there a method or ritual for tattooing objects, sigils, or magically charged symbols on the human body?
A: There are some cultures that have ritualistic practice for getting tattoos done, but are also specific to the types of tattoos of that culture. Such as the Maori and the Samoans. It would probably be best to find where your symbol comes from and see if there is any mentioning of ritualized tattooing in that culture. Otherwise the question would have to be more specific to the actual symbol being used. If it is a symbol/sigil of your own creation you might not need to do a ritual to charge the symbol, depending on how you created it.

Q: I am/know a warrior and would like to find a charm, amulet, or talisman for protection while in combat or harms way, any suggestions?
A: These are several links that people have found that work within the constraints asked above, see other FAQs for answer how to properly charge these runes and make your item.
http://sunnyway.com/runes/warrior.html
http://sunnyway.com/runes/meanings.html

Q: I had a strange experience and I am here seeking answers.
A: Many people come to this place or others like it seeking more information (or straight answers) to what they have experienced. Keep in mind that all most of us can do is give answers based upon our own experiences and knowledge. Do your best not to shoehorn your experience into what others are describing, it can lead you to creating false memories, in order to satisfy the need to have the unknown discovered. It is alright to accept that any answers you find as the most probable, don't simply accept them as 100% the truth. Despite the common saying "looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck - must be a duck", it doesn't actually mean it is a duck, only that is currently the most deductible answer available. You will find in magick and life as well, just because something looks, acts, or appears to be one thing, doesn't actually make it so. If this were true Ted Bundy most certainly was just a nice guy and we would have no need for science as obvious things only have obvious answers.

I guess some obvious recurring ones would be "What does the pentagram/inverted pentagram symbolise?", "What are the Left Hand Path/Right Hand Path?" and "Do people really believe in Lovecraft's creations? Is Cthulu/Necronomicon real?" (or something to explain this side of things).

Hey Stukov i think you have something out of place here

Q: How do I invoke/evoke a demon/angel/spirit/god?
A: Firstly invoke and evoke are completely different things evocation is summoning an entity outside of you and invocation is summoning an entity inside of you. You can use ritual, spells, or willpower. Search for a specific school or thought to find specific answer.

Evokation is to bring from inside out
Invokation is to bring from outside in- if there ever was such a practice.

Initiates invoke as they yet do not understand that all comes from within. Adepts only evoke as they know all comes from within. Here is a little trick to find out if a person is adept or not. If he uses the word invoke, then he has not realized that all comes from within and is thus an Initiate. IMO invokation never happens.

Hmm, I admit pulling my information from elsewhere on the forum and the internet to answer that. I'll see if I can add your opinion as an alternate answer or if there is a discussion to find a common middle ground answer between the two?

Why don't we do some research into this and together on this forum, come to a conclusion- with references.?

I am sure there are others up for it

But for now i have to go sleep

Absolutely, the FAQ won't work out super well if we don't have a balanced and accurate reflection of the truth.

Well after great online searching i havn't found an answer. There seems to be a hell of alot of crap out there on the net- utter mindless crap people have invented.
Unfortunately i have no credible reference to support my claim on the true meaning of Evokation and Invokation. Suffice to say that the experts agree.

I havent had time to research it myself, I will probably just include additional information if you want to write it up in a summary, then I'll add it.

Well i have given you my definition. I beleive it is shared by many high level occutlists. Trouble is i can't support it with references. At the moment i am living away from my book collection. I was first taught this at the OPA in Sydney. I do beleive Alister himself used the word Invockation- so just how strict is the terminology?
Many of your questions i do not want to look into as i might put people off. however these ones i would like to answer

Q: What does the pentagram/inverted pentagram symbolize?

Q: What are the Left Hand Path/Right Hand Path?

Q: Do people really believe in Lovecraft's creations?

Q: Is Cthulu/Necronomicon real?

Q: What is the difference between Esoteric and Exoteric?

Q: Why Kabala?

I think that the general public need to know

I learned it the same way, too. I don't think references are needed, really. If they are, every question should have them. Also, people can just search about it afterwards.

Yeah, I'm not gonna waste my time and effort with references, people can search and verify the truth of what is in here as much as they can with references. There are no scientific experiments to replicate, references are pretty pointless in this field to be perfectly honest. When I get some time to update the FAQ I will, got eye doctor appointment and I'm thinking of seeing the Avengers today before my work week starts tomorrow.

Erm, isn't this limiting the view of the whole forum a bit? I'm sure lots of people would disagree with this, almost as many as would agree.

MPH2012,I just read the same post elsewhere on the forum and I got a little confused there. In this case,as you are answering a Q for the FAQ,that's ok.

Please though, don't duplicate posts for any other reason,it gets messy and we usually delete multiples. [thumbup]

The true origins of the Pentagram go back to ancient times in Europe. The Priests who built Stonehenge and other observatories where very well versed in the movement of the planets and stars. If you track Venus, every Summer Solstice over a period of forty years- it will form a pentagram. Over time, with the rise of the Monotheistic cults, the pentagram became to be known as the symbol of the old cults and eventually a magickal symbol. I think it was Eliphas Levi who first inverted it.

Personally for me the whole concept of 'Black and white' is so lame. All magick is colorful. The concept of 'good and evil' go back to Zoroaster. Who claimed that 'There is only one god'- blaah. he also claimed that all gods are either good or evil. He gave his followers this simple classification of all gods. This was in time picked up by Judaism, Christianity and of course Islam- who still hold such a simple view of the universe, for simple people.
Here is a link to this guy- can you tell me something about him by looking at this?
http://www.google.com.au/imgres?hl=en&c ... ,s:0,i:127

It was also Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche who claimed that the whole 'good and bad' concept was crap. Of course we wise have known it all along. There are bad asses- and there are badder asses.
In terms of magick, magick is every thing, everything you do- not just in ritual. Don't tell me you havn't judged someone in your time, stolen something, ripped someone off, lied, cheated, deceived, given someone an evil look- well that is so called 'Black Magick'.
From my experience, when i meet someone who says 'oh i only practice white magick' - i know i have a F)_*^$#% wit', i know that person is shallow as(ass?). She/he is not objective enough to see himself in true light, they are show ponies(the worst of them) and it is only those who can see there own acts for what they are who have a chance of practicing love.
I have known 'White Witches' to steal the rent, be rude and much more. In fact, if a bloke ever tells you 'i practice black magick'- give him all your money and your daughter- then you can come back tomorrow and pick them up- i promise.
The mature individual, does not NEED TO BE NASTY, he is emotionally (sexually?) balanced and IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS 'BLACK MAGICK PRACTICES'. You know the reason why i don't steal? it is cause i feel guilty afterwards- it is also because i have too much SELF RESPECT. THe mature individual has what Wilhelm Reich would call ' a self regulating character structure'. At the end of the day, it has nothing to do with spiritual or religion- its about maturity.

You see, it is not Black magick or White magick it is Low magick and High Magick. There are some forces that most people are subtly aware of , such as the astral planes. Many pople have had some sort of experience with a dead relative. The there is High Magick, those forces that are at the central core of our consciousness, the Abyss. IT is these forces that not only very few people understand, but magick is dedicated too. Obviously the inverted pentagram is an example.

I'm really doubting that the pentagram comes from Europe. Considering the pentagram was used in the Babyonian religion as the sign of the Human Race. And Stonehenge, so far as I know, was built (or atleast began) by the Dragon Kings.

Technically, I believe current anthropological theory with human species coming out of Afrika they actually moved into Europe first, due to the fact that is where the Neanderthals were located and genetic evidence shows those from Europe and Northern Asia have 2-3% Neanderthal DNA due to mixing. Migration patterns would have human beings roaming Europe before starting civilization in the Middle East, it is near impossible to know if the symbol of the pentagram originated in Babylon, Europe, or elsewhere due to the fact time devours all. With my study of ancient culture of the Middle/South America (Mayans, Aztec, Olmec, etc) with its connections to other places around the world I would say it is likely there was a world wide sea faring race that existed and they may have been the ones that came up with the Pentagram then as their civilization collapsed or went away, its remnants are shared in the use of various symbols in various ancient cultures including those in Europe and Babylon (if not more).

The pentagram is the easiest star to draw in one stroke, only takes five lines, so its likely it originated organically in different places.

I think the human form is simply a standard for this dimension/frequency. That being said, who's to say we didn't all come from another star(s), different human "strains" from different stars or something totally different? Current anthropological theory is based on concrete evidence, which is rather limited, and on radiocarbon dating, which is also limited. Why do some of us look like dogs and some like monkeys, some like lizards and some like penguins? For that matter, why do they call them "apart" ments when they're together?

The literal definitions of invoke and evoke are to call upon and to call forth, respectively. Perhaps invoke could simply be a method of describing "calling upon the power of an entity or idea," to evoke is to "bring it into this realm."

And furthermore, I've determined that Zoroaster has a kangeroo hanging from his ear.

I assume having to do with the old King Aurthur tail (with his name being Aurthur Pendragon, who was supposedly of that line of kings, and who married a Sidhe Guinevere).

Doesn't really look like it, though this is a FAQ, so theoretically anything can get posted here if it serves to enlighten someone else's experiences.

That said, I'll close the thread if it starts to get silly.

I started it bc some people were interested in making one (group effort) but after I started it I was the only one doing it and I just got burned out. Life sometimes justs gets in the way.
