Why do magic at all?

I'm always curious about this and I apologize in advance if a similar thread has already been made, just couldn't be bothered to look. What is your motivation for practicing the occult? With myself it gives me a purpose, to be the best I can be and to reach my potential and to know what human beings are really capable of, after all we only know so much of what our brains can do. To reach godhood is the goal or at least should be, it gives the spirit something to strive for. Another question could be is magic just an advanced kind of self development or do you think there is really more to it?

you know I was in the schyward ask a most beautiful women if she wanted me to play games so we played crib not exactly like the first time but none the less she started playen games oh sad was I over here is like an age place and for disability but the games they play in two weeks you would all be satanic just to survive each cigarette. not the normal mind games erasing everyone dna in the building one by one they bight the crisp. don't rightly know anyones identity in this town but the games they play they are all witches in town so ta answer your question in the name of weak survival many here manipulate just as witches however I do find rare to even notice forms of rituals.

I’ll chip into this survey. I agree with all of the motivations so far (and think some are necessary for progress of the spirit), I’d like to add to the list another motivation. I practice magic for the same reason that some climb a mountain: because it is there, or as Jack said, because it is fun.

We are, I think, inherently magical creatures; manifestation is a natural state of being on this plane of existence. Just because so many do not explore the spiritual side of physical life, doesn’t mean it was not always there. Magic is as natural as waking up to stretch in the morning.

For myself watching manifestations echo back in reality reminds me that I am not just a creature of flesh and gristle, but inherently spirit. It reminds me to celebrate life and be grateful for my friends. It reminds me to star gaze and think “impossible things” and that I’m not alone in the universe. Sometimes, for me, that is enough: “just because.”

[Asurendra: Thank you for the link to the lecture; it was informative. I acknowledge, however, that I ruffled my feathers a bit and flipped off the computer screen when he said that humans were superior to all other spirit types… A human would say that…. Pft ( :) ) ]

Why wouldn't I practice magick and occultism? I have seen what can be accomplished with it, and such things cannot be accomplished by other means that I know of. True, it is psychological and all the occult symbolism may be unnecessary, but it seems to make the psychological manipulation more potent. There is something about symbolism and mythology that really affects the human mind, and if more people could understand the psychological school of magick we could perhaps start building a stronger, more united world.

To the contrary, Magic is an expression, arguably the highest expression, of natural law.
“Magic is the Highest, most Absolute, and most Divine Knowledge of Natural Philosophy, advanced in its works and wonderful operations by a right understanding of the inward and occult virtue of things; so that true Agents being applied to proper Patients, strange and admirable effects will thereby be produced. Whence magicians are profound and diligent searchers into Nature; they, because of their skill, know how to anticipate an effect, the which to the vulgar shall seem to be a miracle.”
-The Goetia of the Lemegeton of King Solomon

Someone wise once said, "a genuine wizard very rarely works real magic. And when he does, he usually works it on himself."

That one is a classic one indeed. I remember quoting that one somewhere else as well. [wink]
