What is a scepter used for in ceremonial magic?

Found a wooden thing that probably was originally intended to hold up curtains, but with a few modifications would make a seriously bad ass scepter. Wondering what they're traditionally used for in ceremonial magic. I remember reading something about it being used in the golden dawn and some other traditions, but i don't know what for. Seems like it would make a great tool for commanding demons, or even for general ritual use, because of the association with kings.

There are probably tons of different designs for scepters in old grimoires, but my knowledge of those is rather limited.

There are a few different scepters in the Golden Dawn initiation ceremonies:
  • The Hierophant's wand ("Scepter of Power")
  • The Hegemon's wand ("Scepter of Wisdom")
  • The Kerux's wand (a caduceus, or the "Scepter of Hermes")
If you want more information on these, there's a PDF of the relevant pages from the Ciceros' Secrets of a Golden Dawn Temple floating around out there.

From 777:
The Sceptre is the weapon of authority referring to Jupiter (Gedulah--magnificence).
...
The Sceptre is not a true weapon. It is the symbol of authority, an ornamental reminder of the wand which must be kept in the background. The Sceptre must not be used to strike, it would break: as soon as its virtue is challenged, it must be discarded instantly for the thunderbolt.
As to the specific uses of scepters in Magical work, I have to admit my lack of knowledge there.

Thanks, I'll see about finding that pdf. I guess if I don't find any specific uses when it comes to ritual work with it, I'll role with the Jupiter/Gedulah/royalty correspondences and figure something out.
