Xiandan (仙丹) also known as "Immortal Alchemy" is the belief of Xian immortals in Taoism are/were a real thing and that we have the potential to become an Immortal ourself. Xiandan practitioners discusses the alchemy in internal alchemy and our own hypotheses of how immortal cultivation could be a real thing or how it could work if it was a real thing.

These are the realms, stages and phases of Xiandan:

1st realm:

Foundation stage.

• - Forming the spiritual roots.
  
  - Qi refinement phase. (Qi, Jing and Shen)
  
  - Houtian body refinement phase.

2nd realm:

Advancement stage.

• - Di refinement phase. (Di, Ren and Tian)
  
  - Xiantian body refinement phase.
  
  - Golden core phase.

3rd realm:

Transcendence stage.

• - Ziran (nature) refinement phase. (Ziran, Yang and Yin)
  
  - Renxian (human immortal) body refinement phase.
  
  - Nascent soul (spiritual foetus/fetus formed in Ziran with Yang energy) phase.

4th realm:

Ascendant stage.

• - Tao refinement phase. (Tao [道], Xiandan [仙丹] and Daoguan [道观])
  
  - Void phase. (Spiritual foetus/fetus develops further in Tao and later ascents to Daoguan)
  
  - Shenxian (spirit/divine immortal) body refinement phase.

Here are the circulation of Qi, Jing and Shen:

Qi To collect Qi, one must circulate the vital energy in the motion of Breath. The airflow of inhaling goes down into your lungs which later goes up as you exhale. That is why it start from (1) to (3) and then (4) to (6).

It also circulates in the pattern of how we eat food (1), digest it (2), expose of excrement (3), as the energy and nutrition is absorbed (4) and spread throughout our body (5 and 6).

! The vital energy behaves sort of like gravity/magnitude. North and south pole of a magnet. Metaphorically, this can be seen as the creation of Earth.

Jing By looking at the flow of energy from the "Circulation of collecting Qi", the energy happens to spin counterclockwise just like our Earth. If counterclockwise is to collect, then the opposite must be to use.

Qi burns around Jing and sort of behave like magma and lava. Magma moves below (1 and 2), Lava moves above (3). As it circulate around Jing, you must collect the heat/fire (4 and 5).

! Metaphorically, this can be seen as the early state of earth during its formation.

Shen Qi flows around Jing like groundwater both in dirt and caves (1). The water heats up and becomes steam that shoots upward as a geyser (2). The steam's heat and vapor flows up into the sky, which later forms clouds (3). When the temperature has cooled down, the moisture in the clouds will condense and become rain (4). The rain then returns to becoming groundwater (1).

! Notice the flow of energy is counterclockwise, flowing through Shen to collect it.

Houtian body refinement circulation: Cleansing, Forging, Quenching and Tempering

Part 1
Cleansing: Cleanse the body by using Shen through Qi to wash the body with a strong wind/pressure.
By understanding that Qi means Breath you could say that breath can symbolize Wind. Shen (Water), with a strong wind would be behaving like a strong river or a stormy weather that clear the area wherever it passes through.

Forging: Forge the body by using Jing through Qi to forge the body with a blacksmith's fire.
Remember that Qi can symbolize wind, therefore by using Jing (Fire) with Qi (Wind), Jing will become a blazing fire like the one in a blacksmith's furnace, forging the body through a blacksmith's fire.

Part 2
Quenching: Quenching the forged body with Shen (Water).

Tempering: Tempering the hard and brittle body with Jing.

Using Jing and Shen to transmute Qi into Di: A) Here Jing symbolizes volcanic eruption and how it makes Qi flourish.

The heat of the earth's core melts the underground elements and flows as magma within the mountains (1 & 2). The magma becomes lava when the volcanoes erupt (3). After the volcanic eruptions has ended, the volcanoes will become dormant (4).

! Volcanic materials ultimately break down and weather to form some of the most fertile soils on Earth, cultivation of which has produced abundant food and fostered civilizations.


B) Here Shen symbolizes the water cycle and how it makes Qi fully transmute into Di.

Water from the mountains flows as rivers down to the ocean (1 & 2). The heat from the sunlight will slowly evaporate the water within lakes and seas, which condense into clouds that float back into land and later becomes rainclouds (2 & 3). In the end, rain will fall and form lakes, ponds and rivers (4).

! With Jing (fertilization) and Shen (rain) the land shall flourish and truly transform into the Earth we know of.

This is how Qi shall transmute into Di.

Using Jing and Di to transmute Shen into Tian: A) Here Jing symbolizes heat and Di is symbolizing the surface of the Earth.

The surface gets hot thanks to geothermal heat from the magma below the surface (1 & 2). Groundwater gets heated up and flows upward, forming hot springs and geysers (3). In the end, the magma remains underground, heating up more groundwater (4).

B) Here Di symbolizes atmosphere and Tian is symbolizing thunderstorms.

With downdraft from the sky and updraft from the surface, heat transfers moisture into the air (1 & 2). When the cloud droplets become too cold, they freezes into ice crystals. The updraft makes the ice crystals inside the cumulonimbus cloud rise up and collide with other cloud droplets that then forms graupels. When the ice crystals collide with the graupels, the ice crystal's particles become positively charged, where the graupel's particles become negatively charged (3). In the end, thunder and lightning is formed within the cumulonimbus clouds (4).

! Lightning is known as a Heavenly force.

Using Tian and Di to transmute Jing into Ren: A) Here Tian symbolizes lightning and Di is symbolizing the lakes and seas.

! Some scientists believes that lightning bolts unlocked the phosphorus that was needed to create biomolecules, which formed the basis of life on Earth.

B) Here Di symbolizes the chemicals within large bodies of water and Ren is symbolizing life in its earliest form of microbes.

! Life being born from abiogenesis is a great metaphor for Di transmute into Ren.

Tian, Di and Ren is one big metaphor for the creation of life on Earth, from electrical energy into chemical energy.

In the western tradition, the lower subplanes are progressively discarded leaving only first subplane material. There are said to be specific requirements for subplane material before each inner initiation.

At later initiations even the highest subplane material is discarded and what looks like the personality is manifested from the five electricities known to the Hindus.

FAQ for "The spiritual roots technique".
Q: What does "finding the acupuncture/meridian points through the sense of touch" mean? Does it mean to touch and feel or focus on them?
A: Try and touch the middle of your forehead once and concentrate on that sensation without touching it again.

Q: What does it mean to "listen to the body"? Does it mean to see the body's reaction?
A: "Listening to your body" is a fitness saying which means "to not overdo something" or "don't do it when not feeling well".

Q: Where can I find a credible meridian chart?
A: This is the one I use:

A: When you feel that it is easy to concentrate on the "beginning points" and want to explore other meridian points. A meridian is formed when those other meridian points are connecting with each other since a meridian is the connection itself.

Q: How strong of a buzzing energy feeling does it need to be? How easy "to concentrate on my meridian points" does it need to be to consider them well established?
A: When you feel that you can easily focus on a set of meridians, that is when it is time to focus on strengthening the connections.

To do so, you need to ask yourself whether you feel satisfied with how strong you can sense the strings of meridians, or is the "buzzing energy feeling" not strong enough for your satisfaction. If not, then keep concentrating on that set of meridians until you are satisfied.

But, if you do feel satisfied with that level of a buzzing sensation, I would personally advise you to make sure of it before moving to the next set of meridian points by giving it some more time to practise on.

Here is my brainstorming:
In Neidan and Qigong like practices, it is understood that to meditate, one needs to breathe in energy into your lower cinnabar field (Jing). It is understood that they need to start from Jing to Qi and then Shen. They believe that circulation is done through the movements of Qigong, Neigong or Tai Chi. These practices are based on traditional Chinese medicine and Taoism.

My thought was to question this and wonder:
Does one really gain energy from breathing in the air?
Why start from Jing?
What is the nature/element of Jing, anyway?
How and why does "one transmute into two and two transmute into three"?
Do those movements in Qigong, etc. really move the energy?

The question that enlightened me was:
What if you are supposed to do something while meditating?

From there, I started concentrating on my "third eye" acupuncture point until I felt that buzzing sensation. Later, I explored my face to find other points, not knowing that these points were acupuncture/acupressure points. Only when they started forming connections with each other, which felt like strings of cobwebs under my skin, did I realize that they take the form of meridians.
As time flew by, I started to get more enlightenments, and all the puzzle pieces started to fit with each other. Wuxing, Wu Wei, Taoism, etc.

Then the answers to some of my own questions from the beginning came to me:
Does one really gain energy from breathing in the air?
The human body gains its energy from cells breaking down nutrients, from the food we eat. Humans obtain energy from three classes of fuel molecules: Carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. The potential chemical energy of these molecules is transformed into other forms, such as thermal (Jing), kinetic (Shen), and other chemical forms (Qi).

Why start from Jing?
Jing (精) means essence and/or extract, but what is it the essence/extract of?
Qi (氣) means gas, air and/or weather. Qi is elemental.
The extract of the elements is Essence. Without Qi there is no Jing. So, one should naturally start with Qi and not Jing.

What is the nature/element of Jing, anyway?
Since Jing is known to give a warm feeling in the guts, and that your body generates heat (thermal) from metabolism, especially after eating. Jing's element should be Fire.

Shen (神) means God, deity, spirit and/or heaven. Lightning is known as a heavenly force to smite demons. Lightning is made of electricity and electricity is a form of kinetic energy. Lightning forms due to positive charged ice crystals and negative charged graupels. Ice and graupels are made from cloud droplets. Therefore, it can be concluded that Shen's element is Water.

Qi is elemental; therefore, Qi is all five elements by nature.

How and why does "one transmute into two and two transmute into three"?

It is not the air but the life force that penetrates the air

Another possible way to refine the body​
Heating/Refining (1): Use Jing and Qi
Refine the body with a strong heat by combining Jing and Qi, like how a blacksmith's forge heats the metal.

Forging (2): Use Shen and Qi
Forge the body with a strong and cold kinetic force, like a blacksmith's hammer striking the hot metal.

Quenching (A): Shen
After refining and forging the body to satisfaction. Heat/Refine the body one last time, then quench the body in Shen alone.

Tempering (B): Jing
Once the body has been quenched, temper it with Jing alone.

When forming my spiritual roots, I usually take about a month.

• 1 week to open the meridian point or points.

• 1 week to open another point or points.

• 2 weeks for establishing the connection a.k.a. the meridian.

[Sometimes it takes longer.]

After that, I reactivate the meridians from point to point.
After about 1 - 4 weeks of reactivating them, the meridians will start to feel more firm or settled.
That is where I move on to the next meridian point / points and start the process all over again.

To make this process faster it is advised to focus on a set of meridian points that would or could form a whole meridian.

A meridian, a.k.a. the connection between points, feels like a vibrating drop of water rolling down my face. Where the points, by themselves, feel like small buzzing spots.

The levels of spiritual roots development are:

1. Head.
2. Upper half.
3. Arms.
4. Lower half.
5. Legs.

Early stage: Just started.

Mid stage: Can sense all the meridians.

Final stage: Can sense that all the meridians are a more firm/settled.

Example: Spiritual roots phase, level [1-5], early - final stage.

Cultivation of the spiritual roots technique is said to be about moving/guiding Neiqi to form a spiritual meridian known as a root. This movement/guidance of Neiqi has 3 basic principles:

Yu Wei (Moving with movement).
Yu Wei is where you physically touch/press the acupuncture point once and then focus on the sensation that it left.

Yu Wei and Wu Wei.
To use the Yu Wei less and Wu Wei more you will need to try and use your sense of awareness to feel an acupuncture point of your choice, that you have once touched but didn't touch this time. Try to hover or point a finger over your acupuncture point without actually touching it, then try to concentrate on it through your sense of awareness.

Wu Wei. (Moving without movement)
Wu Wei is where you don't touch/press the acupuncture point, but instead concentrates on the point without any voluntary physical movements.

To prove that Xiandan truly works as intended it will be necessary for it to be able to do either one of these options:

• Make a healthy and mature tree fall with one or two punches.
• Crush a solid rock with your bear hands.
• Sharpening your sense of sight or hearing.
• Live for more than 100 years while still looking at least 20 years younger than 100 years old.
• Run faster than an average human athlete.
• Gain/unlock a new sense.
• Make a seed sprout in your hand.
