It's fairly simple. If you wish to link to an avatar that is on the net, you must type in the link(webaddress) to it in the box.

Or you can upload an avatar from your own computer by clicking on the 'browse' button. That in turn takes you to your files, which you will have to go through and find your avatar. Remember also that the dimensions must be 60x60 I think. If you still need help Private Message me and I'll try my best to help you out.

I Ching (Discussion and Questions on I Ching)

An intro to I Ching

Reading the I Ching involves casting coins or yarrow stalks to build a series of 6 lines called a "hexagram". Each line is either Yin (the passive or feminine force) or Yang (the active or masculine force). The resulting hexagram is then looked up in the I Ching itself, to yield a passage describing what each of the 6 lines means. There are 64 possible hexagrams, each of which can be further broken down into groups of 3 lines called "trigrams". One of the most fascinating aspects of I Ching readings is that each line in the present hexagram may be old, indicating that it is about to change from Yin to Yang or vice versa - by inverting each of these changing lines, we can generate a hexagram depicting the immediate future.
Key: Lines are numbered from 1 at the bottom to 6 at the top. Divided lines are Yin and undivided lines are Yang. Black lines are new (unchanging) and gray lines are old (changing).

Interpretation: I Ching readings can be challenging to interpret, precisely because they paint a very complete picture of the situation. Notably, each of the 6 lines of the reading describes a specific individual, and the outcome of their endeavor. This is what makes the I Ching so unique and powerful - where Tarot or Runes may give you an understanding of your circumstances, the I Ching actually gives you an understanding of your OPTIONS. You will find the I Ching easier to interpret if you consider that it was written in ancient China, and think of the more peculiar expressions in that context. For example, our favorite anachronistic term is "efficacious tortoise" - a reference to the food of a wealthy man, similar to the meaning of "live Maine lobster" to many modern Americans.

Translation: The most commonly used English translation of the I Ching (also known as the Yi Jing) was by Cary Baynes in 1951, from a German translation by Richard Wilhelm in 1923 - though very poetic and beautiful to read, it suffers not only from being a translation of a translation, but from Wilhelm's infusion of Christian values into the Confuscian text. To avoid these problems, the version of the I Ching we use is based on the oldest scholarly English translation, by James Legge in 1882 (and yes, our version IS protected by copyright). The grammar and spelling has been modernized slightly, but the words and meaning are very true to the original Chinese text. For example, you will note many references to a "superior man", "proper conduct", "looking above", or "looking below" - the ageless Chinese concepts of formal role within society and of the specific behavior appropriate to that role.

From what I hear the Yarrow stick method is much more accurate and insightful than with the coin method. So I would suggest people try it and see what results you get.

I just read up on the I Ching today and gave it a try using ordinary pennies. I asked the Holy Sage of Heavenly Oracular Wisdom (yes, I do use grandiose honorifics seriously) if my time in University will lead me to study in Japan. The result was hexagram #56, The Traveller.

I just had a free sample reading done by an online Oracle using the I Ching ( http://www.facade.com/iching/ ). The result is promising. I want to be wary of asking the same question too many times, because I have read that if I do not accept what the Sage has to say, then it will be insulting and further readings will become distorted and cloudy.

The present is embodied in Hexagram 13 - T'ung Jen (Fellowship with Men): The union of me appears here in the remote districts of the country, indicating progress and success. It will be advantageous to cross the great stream. It will be advantageous to maintain the firm correctness of the superior man.The second line, divided, shows the representative of the union of men in relation with his kindred. There will be occasion for regret. The third line, undivided, shows its subject with his arms hidden in the thick grass, and at the top of a high mound. For three years he makes no demonstration. In the fifth line, undivided, the representative of the union of men first wails and cries out, and then laughs. His great host conquers, and he and the subject of the second line meet together. The situation is shifting, and Yin (the passive feminine force) is gaining ground.

The future is embodied in Hexagram 38 - K'uei (Opposition): Notwithstanding the presence of opposition, in small matters there will still be success. The things most apparent, those above and in front, are embodied by the upper trigram Chi'en (Heaven), which is tansforming into Li (Fire). As part of this process, strength and

creativity are giving way to brightness and warmth. The things least apparent, those below and behind, are embodied by the lower trigram Li (Fire), which is transforming into Tui (Lake). As part of this process, brightness and warmth are giving way to joy, pleasure, and attraction.

I Ching (Discussion and Questions on I Ching)

I've been into the I Ching for many years.
I actually never played around with natal hexagrams though...
Here's a link outlining the method:

http://www.psychicsophia.com/taoofbirthdays/natalhex.htm

Hope that's what you are looking for...

I wouldn't put too much stock in spud666's comments by the way...it's some sort of psycho-babble actually. The Legge translation is not very respected at all among I Ching scholars that I have read. They pretty much universally condemn it as contrived and unprofessional. I am given to understand he never actually had any original texts to work from... In any case, since the Wilhelm/Baynes translation (which is a good one by the way) there have surfaced a number of very fine translations from actual chinese scholars as well so it's always a good idea to cross-reference as much as you can find to get a balanced perspective on things...If you have that much dedication to it of course...

I've beeing flirting with the YiJing quite for some time whilist not fully having
decided to use it as a personal oracle. Admittedly I have at times received
oracles that left me dumbfounded and in awe, concerning their clarity and insight.
Its downright frightening at times. I have found that a great deal of insight can be
received if one formulates the right question before advising it. I mean the
depth of understanding and insight received is directly analogous to the depth
of the question asked for a matter. So take your time and properly formulate
your question, it will save you from numerous cloudy casts.

edit:
I just posted it after I've done 3 casts concerning business matters.
The two were Opposition and Fellowship with Men  Rin

Can someone clarify how moving lines are interpreted in the primary hexagram. For example, if one moving line is found in the primary hexagram, is that considered the line that is analyzed to determine whether the question was answered? What if there are two lines in the primary hexagram? Does one moving line take precedence over the other? Is one not given attention to? What if there are three moving lines? Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Probabilities with coins and yarrow stalks

Some people have suggested that the method of consulting via coins is not as good as the yarrow rite because the yarrow's probabilities of yin and yang lines occurring is asymmetric, whereas it is symmetric in the coin ritual and therefore not representative of how it should be.

This is a fallacy, because although the original method of consulting the Yijing was by yarrow stalks the yarrow rite as we know it today is a late reconstruction (12th century) and is not necessarily performed as it was originally. Read More

Well, since hexagrams are grown bottom-up, logically the moving lines flow likewise, from the bottom.
So I guess, the uppermost line signifies the culmination, while the bottom first line signifies the onset
of change. I presume that the greatest significance is found in the middle (if any) which somehow can
give you the 'core' of the situation. Also the middle lines represent the Man that bridges the Earth and
Heaven so its logical that this particular area soughts attention.
You can visit joel biroco's YiJing Dao site, as I consider him a connoisseur at the matter, as well as
most things chinese.

Yes, I've been reading through his site for a while, thanks. I know it's still up for debate in some circles regarding the use and misuse of moving lines and ruling lines. Just wanted to see if anyone had a personal rationalization regarding their own personal use.

To the IChing, I posed the question, "If John Kerry were to be elected, what would be the outcome to the people and the world while he's president?" This is what the IChing shows. http://www.eclecticenergies.com/iching/consultation.php?lns=888778

I'd like to do an if Bush becomes president, but I'll wait a bit until people read this and give ideas and interpretations. I find this to be quite fun. :-D

For kicks, I consulted the I-Ching on this too (I am by no means even remotely proficient with this oracle :D )

The question I posed was: Will John Kerry be elected as the new President of the U.S.

The first hexagram I received was LU (treading)

http://www.panix.com/~tkirman/iching/s_ic/10.html

There were three moving lines (the first three of the lower gua). When there are three moving lines, the middle one is considered the positive or negative answer to the question being asked. The middle line text is translated as:
Treading on a Way which is smooth and level.
For a solitary man, steadfastness brings about good fortune.

I took this as a positve sign that Kerry would be elected over Bush.

Because of the moving lines, this generates a second hexagram which was TUN (Withdrawing).

http://www.los.org/iching/s_ic/33.html

This second hexagram can be interpreted as the future of what will happen when Kerry is elected president. The second hexagram's texts state:
Withdrawing brings about success.
In small things it is beneficial to be steadfast.

Well, my two cents from my rather remedial understanding of the I-Ching is that Kerry will be elected as the new President of the U.S. I won't even be remotely surprised that I'm wrong though.

I was going to move this post to the political forums, but this topic seems to encompass divination, eastern faiths, and politics. If another moderator wishes to move this, please feel free.

Wow. Very interesting. It's almost so clear it's scary. Well for those who want to read more on what mr. gordo's reading was, I entered in what he got so you could read a more thorough example of the prediction. Here it is. http://www.eclecticenergies.com/iching/consultation.php?lns=996777 ... And here is the hexagram that the change from the first hexagram created. http://www.eclecticenergies.com/iching/consultation.php?lns=887777

It sounds like Kerry will be president and we will withdraw our troops.

Further analysis of the text lines:

The first hexagram I received was LU (treading)

There were three moving lines (the first three of the lower gua). When there are three moving lines, the middle one is considered the positive or negative answer to the question being asked. The middle line text is translated as:

Treading on a Way which is smooth and level. The term "Way" is capitalized here. This "Way" can be defined as being translated as being "Tao" or "Way." This can possibly mean that John Kerry is in tune with the "Tao" or "Way." Hence he is in harmony with the Tao.

For a solitary man, steadfastness brings about good fortune. This can possibly mean that John Kerry is the "steadfast, solitary man." I infer this because of the fact that I personally deem any success George Bush has had is mainly due to his much more knowledgeable cabinet members that he has selected. I believe Bush's decisions are much more influenced by the likes of those that surround him, than any independent thought on his own (trying not to sound condescending here.)

Because of the moving lines, this generates a second hexagram which was TUN (Withdrawing).

This second hexagram can be interpreted as the future of what will happen when Kerry is elected president. The second hexagram's texts state:

Withdrawing brings about success.

Withdrawing brings about success. This can be a possible withdrawal of troops much quicker under Kerry than Bush?

In small things it is beneficial to be steadfast. No idea what this means. :D
