Does anyone know why some magicians wear skullcaps? This has really been on my mind lately. I would also like to know why some occultists shave their heads.

This is just speculation on my part but perhaps it's the same reason some jews, muslims and catholic prelates wear skull caps, as a respect to a deity in their prayers/ magical workings.
It could also stem from the rennaisance magicians wearing head coverings such as Dee, Bacon and others as depicted in their portraits, though this was probably just the fashion of the time.
As for head shaving, it may be an outward manifestation of removing yourself from the mundane and material as buddhist devotees and some hindus tend to do.

I know that ancient Egyptian priests (who were also magicians to a large degree) shaved their headas and indeed their entire body hair in order to be free of lice while worshipping their gods.

Seems there's also a practical aspect to it then as well, similar to the dietary religious requirements of jews and muslims, or the need to wash before prayer, bury a body the same day as they died and for women to ritually wash before marriage.. A kind of religious CDC directive.

I have very long hair and a long beard/goatee, much like The Persian Magi, Adam Kadmon, Christ, Moses, Pythagorus and Eliphas Levi to name but a few timeless hippies!

More random tidbits.
Jews cover their skulls to show their (virtue of) humility and separation from God.
The Christian tonsure, i.e. bald haircut, was a sign of entering clergy and that of renouncing the of the mundane world of fashion and honor. (Don't tell me that men don't have issues about going bald.) The Zucchetto, i.e. skullcap, originally was to keep the exposed section of the tonsure warm. (Those drafy non central-heated rectories and churches

skullcap for jews is known as a Keepa. As others said for their humility and separation from God, but also importantly it symbolizes that since our heads are under a keepa, we are under God.

Thanks everyone. I already know about the use of the kippa in Judaism and the kufi in Islam. I'm concerned about skullcaps for occultists but I guess it's a part of the Jewish influences with many of us.

I wouldn't say Jewish influence on many of us, but its influence on Western Civilization as a whole. The purpose of a hat in magic is two fold taking ideas from the Kippa and hats in general. Special workings require special clothing. Sadly this concept (of speical clothing) is somewhat diminished in the world due to the USA's cultural heritage of ignoring class, and globalization where fashion like everything else is becoming more uniform. E.g. a very good friend died last year and at the wake, I was the only person aside the widow that was dressed in black, everyone else had "jeans & t-shirt."
The second purpose again from the Kippa is that magic is a sacred act. More so that magic is under the auspices of God, and any magical action therefore must be in conforminity with his Will and Law. This is clearly stated in various medieval grimoires on their definitions and purposes of magic. I would say though that modern occult History-Revisionists would change this idea from working under God to working as God. But as we have explored with the history of the hat, this is not the case.

Thanks Tiro. I wear a white skullcap when I perform LRP, Star Ruby, and MPR. It makes me feel more "in the magickal world" and out of this mundane one. I also wear my striped house robe because I have yet to obtain a tau robe.

Lol, nice.
Actually, I wear a kufi and mine is knit. It looks like a modern day beanie cap or a very large kippa.

I shave my head. Mainly for my own not wanting to bother with combing my hair, though also for purposes of being seperate from the nutsos out there, lol. Though I would not wear any head gear unless I were to were a ski cap to protect my lil head from the cold weather of washington, lol.

My head itself is not quite shaved or bald, but you can see my scalp because of my very short hair. I've always wondered what it was with LaVey and Crowley having shaved heads... maybe it's just the thing to look evul to the muggles?

Re: Skullcap
According to the teachings of the Toltec Seers of pre-Columbian Mexico, human beings have an energetic hole above their heads. We have no awareness in that area. And, spirits take advantage of this to insert thoughts and feelings inside us from above.Occult Forum Archive wrote:Original post: Khered
