(QBLH) How do you spell it? (קַבָּלָה)

This sorta bugs me, and I'm sure there's no "official" spelling of it, but I'd like to come to some consensus on this...

Why am I doing this? Because I find it messy when I use one spelling in one place, and than use a different one in another, and I come off sounding, as usual, like an idiot.

There is no correct spelling, as you say, because english and hebrew use different alphabets but I always write "Qabalah". It is spelt QophBethLamed, and the final Heh would be added as a mater lectionis to aid pronunciation. Other spellings are based on the way the word sounds, which I suppose is just as legitimate - and actually this is exactly what the spelling Qabalah is based on anyway.

If it really bothers you, then this poll is the best idea. It's just a matter of preference. If you're that pedantic, though, you should always just write it in Hebrew. Crowley spelt a lot of greek words with their original alphabet and nobody complains.

A random selection of modern Hebrew phrase books and dictionaries use the K variant to represent the letter Kuf, so anyone who claims that the "correct" spelling is "Qabalah" is on uncertain ground.

There has been a tendency for non-Jewish books on Kabbalah published this century to use the spelling "Qabalah". Jewish publications are relatively uniform in preferring the spelling "Kabbalah".

oh well.

You spell it as it suits your needs, unless of course you are writing in ancient Hebrew. Everyone has an opinion on it and how it's spell, much like the Magic vs. magik vs. magick vs. (enter stuff ad nauseum here).

Spell it as it suits you. The only one that will have an issue (and they are usually quick to point it out) or those that believe it is spelled only one way (and if that's the case, they better be writing it in Hebrew). Just agree with it and move on.

The spelling is no where near as important as the concept.

Advice taken.

Thanks, Doh, and everyone else...

There's really only one correct spelling, and that's kuf-bet-lamed-heh. But I know what you mean.

My practice-- and I know a number of people who do the same-- is when referring to the system of Jewish mysticism, I spell it Kabbalah, which is the received English transliteration in the Jewish anglophone world. When referring to the medieval Christian system of magic loosely based on Jewish Kabbalah, I spell it Cabala, the Latinized way. When referring to the system of Western mysticism used by folks like Eliphas Levi and Aleister Crowley, I spell it Qabala, which is how it seems to be overwhelmingly spelled by the books I see on the shelves of New Age bookstores.

I spell it however Madonna does. Celebrities know best. Other than that I agree with Doh and Levite transliterations of words outside the romance languages is hard to say, I mean is it Osama Bin laden or Usama ben ladin or you summer's been laid in.

The mystery of the human tongue.

I found one thing from the Wikipedia article on "Hermetic Qabalah" (their spelling):
It is most often transliterated with a 'Q' rather than a 'K' or a 'C', distinguishing it from Jewish Kabbalah and Christian Cabbalah.
Problem is, I think MS Word must be Christian, because it always spells it "Cabala."

Doesn't surprise me...

Just as Christianity took over the western world when it comes to religion, Microsoft took over the western world when it comes to computers. M$ and Christianity must be brothers, or at least cousins... lol

Even Anglo-Judaic sources haven't exactly been uniform. In older MSS, you often see the word rendered as "Cabala(h)," whereas after the revivification of Hebrew as a national language (and thuse the Academy of the Hebrew Language) "Qabalah" has started appearing more often.

Or we could go the route of Soncino and use a K with a diacritic dot underneath.

(I'm going back into hiding now)
