astrological influences - believe in um or don't
Original post: malachius
I would be interested in learning how many memebrs believe that the movement of the heavenly bodies influence their CM & other Magical workings.
I have had success with many forms of magic while not giving much( any actually) attention to astrological influences.
Please share your views on this subject.

i believe in correspondences...most of which do correlate to astrological influences. At least the "first" 8 planets and solar and lunar influences, anyhow.
so my answer would be yes.
I don't mean that I believe in horoscopes or what most folks *call* astrology.
Rather, I do plan my spellwork by taking the moon phase and other astrological correspondences to the purpose of the working into account whenever possible. I'm certainly not saying that it absolutely must work that way for everyone...but it does seem to give more power to my spellwork. Who knows, perhaps it is only my belief that gives the spellwork it's extra "oomph" but either way, works for me.
my $0.02 anyhow.
must run. catch ya later.

I sometimes do pay attention to moon phases, planet positions but generally I pretty much succeed without them too.

Mercury has been retrograge for almost 3 weeks now and it's really been affecting me. I can't type, nor think, nor spell, nor get certain things done without something screwing up. Of course, the more I pay attention to it, the more I notice it's effect, but then again, so do the positive aspects as well.

I mentioned this same thing in a similar post, but I spent an entire year meticulously following astrological influences and working them into my spells and my life in general. At the end of which, I succeeded in little more than driving myself batty and sucking a lot of spontaneity from my magick and my life as a whole.
Luna is a little different and I do take her into account for spellworking, though she is not a deciding factor...my Will is.

I do pay attention to the planets in my workings. I consider the days and hours of the week certainly for such practices as talismanic magick.
The recent transit of Venus featured highly in the recharge of a Solar pentacle I have.

As a practitioner of "astro-qaballa", astrology and rite-timing play an important part in my work. In addition to this I utilise moon phases, solar movements (Resh) and planetary hours.

I utilize astrological influences in my work, however I attribute no objective reality to them or any other correspondance which exists in metaphysical theory. I do this despite my overwhelming experience that such metaphysical concepts do exist, in the hopes of remaining as scientific as possible.

If you believe it, it has significance.
Q: "Is it only a paper moon?"
A: "Maybe"

Well. There are some workings that are practically impossible "when the stars are in the wrong position". Opening a gateway to hell, for example, requires a blood moon and there is no other way around it physically for the human. For higher magicians of course anything is possible. And please don't assume I mean anyone on this forum I certainly wouldn't want anyone to feel uncomfortable, these types have long left behind their need for a physical body.

What da fork?! Gateway to hell? Did you learn this in a book or through interaction with spirits? What's "hell" in your meaning, too? I only ask because there are many variations of hell out there and I have no idea what you mean.

Friends,
I have found that working with astrologically significant times is very benificial.
That said it is only a tool for the practitioner and one should not feel limited to those times to do magic. As pAmphAge mentioned spontaniety can be quite important. Some things assist in ceremony, tools, altars, robes, natual settings, well built temples, set and setting and even astrologically useful times - all of these kinds of things can be usefull and advantagous for a ritual, but none are necessary in my opinion.
Personally I like the idea of harnessing the planetary orbs and stellar bodies toward my ceremonial ends, it has done nothing but added to my ritual work.
If you have in interest in how to use astrological forces and elections [specific astrological times for specific kinds of influence], you may find alot of very useful information at Christopher Warnock's Renaissance Astrology website.

LadyH is right (though, I'm not all that sure on that particular example), some ARE nearly impossible (if not outright impossible), and many, many more are much simplified. While most things that a ceremonial magickan might like to do he or she could likely do them with little to no thought. But to one that is rather weak, or just does not have the knowledge or experience yet (like me) could greatly benefit from watching the stars before performing a ritual.
A lot of the things in the stars aid in at least Witchcraft, and I know this though both personal experience as well as though second hand knowledge. It only stands to reason that it could very likely aid the ceremonial magickian just as well...even if it is to a lesser degree.
A lot of the older grimoires talk about doing things under the second Tuesday of may under a full moon while being surrounded by wild turnips...I think a lot of those things are totally bogus, but more generally speaking I am a firm believer in astrology (even though I don't pay all that much attention to it myself).

Of course, one could also use the words to open the gate in rituals such as Liber Pyramidos or TROA...or even the Baphomet invocation/Mass of Chaos
