My advice is to turn to yourself first and search for your own path, don't be a tourist - be an explorer.
One can never now what their true agenda is, it might not be the same as yours. So be careful of what you trust them or anyone else about, practical matters is one thing; personal life-choices is totally different.

Guided meditations can enable you to find your guide. You'll definitely know it when you speak to him/her , as their is a reality about the experience thats very weird.
The first time which was the most powerful one was through a guided meditation by Stuart Wilde. Whom you've prob. heard of.

One does not "find" a Guide, the Guide "finds" you. Your responsibilty is to open yourself up to know when it is there and train yourself in communication with the Guide, different Guides communicate in different ways. Mine likes to throw things and be a smart ass sometimes, but so do I, so we hit it off pretty well. Chances are you already have a Guide, you have just not opened yourself to it yet.
Can give more info if desired.

It's bloody weird though , the first time that you meet your guide , i agree the guide is their waiting for you. But when it starts communicating with you and knowing it was an living being in your inner world. Strangest part is their is no shock and does feel right.

You are your own guide. All other guides are false.

I think we are talking about two different things here. One should always be the main "leader" on their "Path" in life, their on "Guide" in making final decisions as to what they will do, follow, believe, practice, etc. One should never take the word of another at face value without questioning it, IMO.
However, Guides/Spirit Guides/Totems/Angels.....whatever one chooses to call it, are valid resources in enhancing your spiritual belief system and practice. They come and go, and some stay longer than others. Some arrive to help you understand a particular situation, and once you do understand, their purpose is complete and they leave. Sometimes there are Guides, like John, who are there with you from beginning to end....and through many lifetimes. They have a purpose as well.
Guide = a leader (and sometimes protector).......but no one should be a blind follower. I do not believe however, that all other Guides than oneself...is false. I have had tremendously successful experiences in working with Guides, my own and Guides of others as well, the only thing "false" is when the Guide is not truly....a GUIDE.

I find that meditating, and projecting your mind's voice upwards, can yield some good results - this is how I came into contact with Karan.
Arkh was kind of watching me for a while before I even realised he was there, and even now, he's rarely around.
Osprey came to me in a dream/vision.
I used to picture myself laying on my back under a huge radio tower or something, and projecting my voice from the top of it... Try doing this each night in a light trance before you go to sleep, and record your dreams the next day.
