Astral Plane?

I just noticed that this thread didn't have any pertinent responses, so I'll throw a few out here. How exactly to "describe" it is kind of tough (I'm assuming you're talking about the classical definition of "astral" and not just floating around your house). It's anything you want it to be, or what others have created already. Things melt away and change constantly, depending on your level of concentration, and it's generally pretty wild experience.

There was a movie with Robin Williams (but I can't remember the name) where he ends up in heaven or something, and he's living inside an impressionist painting. It's kind of like that, but in all actuality it depends on what you're expecting to see. There are some really crazy places, but also some that just are an empty room with a few people wandering around in them, and fairly normal looking. In a place that's completely linked to thought and dream, you're going to find any and everything imaginable.

I just meant in that you're in a different dimension than you're used to, because you could AP and then float around your neighborhood if you wanted to, but I don't think that's what people are talking about when they say "astral." I guess it would be the difference between a standard OOBE and an astral projection, although when you AP it's kind of similar, but not exactly the same. I hope that made sense, because I'm getting confused and I wrote the damn thing.

You know that old cliche of "life is what you make it"?

Well the astral seems to take that to extreames....

Maybe you're asking the wrong question ;)

One of these answers is bound to be correct for YOU, and it's up to YOU to figure out which one. I've not fully anserted it for myself (mainly cuz I think I've been to two of them)...so I really can not give you my definition. The best I can/will do (and did) was google the question in hopes that I could enlighten and entertain any and all asking the question for themselves. <-- almost sounds like I'm mad or something *shrug*

I think more people will need to get involved with this question to clear it up...but then more people would likely just add more questions...

Well, the thing is, if we are to hope to communicate with each other about the astral plane, we need to come up with a meaning for the words "astral plane" which is meaningful for the majority of us. That's how humans communicate (mostly), through language.

if I had to pick I'd guess someplace between
"The invisible "other" world that is unseen from our material/temporal world, another dimension of reality."
and
"a place supposedly existing at a level just beyond normal human perception where the spiritual self, freed from its physical body, may exist. "

as those seems to be the more common ones. (OOBE aside).

Yeah, apparently trying to answer this question will do that to a person, myself included. Here's my second go at trying to define my idea of the "classical astral," which I wasn't really thinking about too much as I wrote it in the first place, but now I feel driven to explain it.

Ok, here we go. Imagine you're walking around your house at night, everything is fine. You're happily engrossed in daily reality. Later at night, you decide to AP. You're successful, and you're floating around your room watching your hands melting (I really recommend this at least once, but that's beside the point). Now, technically you are AP'ing, but since it's not the first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks of the astral dimension I don't add it into my "classical astral" category. Because the astral is composed of an infinite number of realms, dreams, and thoughts, wandering around your astral house is technically "astral," but it's fairly mundane. It's playing tee-ball when you could be pitching at Yankee stadium.

Nobody really reads about AP'ing and says "Man, it would be cool to walk around in my basement while my body is in a trance upstairs." The first thought is usually that they want the Through the Looking Glass effect. You want to wander around strange realities, meeting up with even stranger beings, and generally expose yourself to something you don't see every day. Popping in on someone's dream, creating your own little world in the blink of an eye, and shooting bolts of lightning from your ass, whatever; these are the things you can't do on a normal basis, unless you know something I don't.

But, since the astral encompasses just about everything you could ever imagine, wandering around your house is technically "astral," but my stupid qualification of "classical" has probably confused more people than it helped. If this didn't help any, just ignore that I wrote "classical astral" and picture the astral as a scene from Alice in Wonderland. Robert Bruce uses that metaphor, and I think it's pretty damn accurate. Picture the most ridiculous scene imaginable, then the most boring and mundane scene. Both of those are astral so long as you're projecting, because it consists of the entire spectrum. It's what you want it to be, or what others have made it out to be.

As for the technical definition, Qryztufre's two are pretty good.
