Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophy wrote in one of his books:

"Learn to value truth and reality over appearance and opinion"

This is one of my all-time favorite quotes and it keeps lingering in my thoughts...

What's your take on it?

Probably the most basic and obvious statement of all time.

Might as well say: seek truth and not falsity, seek health and not sickness, seek growth and not stagnation, seek effectiveness over failure.

Also, one could say there is no such thing as Reality and there are only opinions. Or perhaps Reality can only be shadowed forth in relative opinions. Again, one could say that there is nothing BUT appearances and that is what we have to work with, or one could say that appearances and reality, truth and falsity are two sides of the same coin...

Why is the opinion so lowly esteemed? Truth like an Absolute Truth (maybe just a dominant opinion, which is the closest we can get) can become an insult to individual perspective (minority opinions, if properly formed, ought to be considered too... right?)

Just because something is obvious doesn't make it common sense, so in that regard, good quote!

Here's a better quote. I believe Winston Churchill said it:

Men occasionally stumble over the truth. Most will pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened.

'truth' is more of a concept than a thing.
it may exist, but it's not really something any person can 'know' ...you can only strongly suspect it's presence ;)

I think it works better just as "Learn" or rather "Experience"

Come to think of it, the quote may be referring to not just being superficial in your understanding of things and not accept things at face value?

See past the smoke n' mirrors maybe?

To Limit Truth and Reality to mere Intellectualism denies the Basic Infinitude of Truth and Reality. Objectivity is Impossible while constrained to the Egoist Individualism of Man tainted by Subjective Experience."

The Paradoxical thing is that the Road to Realization lies through the Intellect even though at a certain point the Intellect limits True Realization. Verily it is a winding path the Aspirant must walk...
