What does "spirituality" mean at all?

Emergent or individual religions, small groups or individualised, modern practices.

What does "spirituality" mean at all?

I have heared diferent definitions of this word.

For some, the spirit is our connection to the whole, the universe.

For other, spirituality means grouth, which purpose is gaining power over the others!

For many people the spirituality is deeply associated with the orthodox religion. But
what is the (orthodox)religion?

I have read in the book "Rune Power. The Secret Knowledge of the Wise Ones" of
Kenneth Meadows, that the spirit is those part of us,that is capable to dream. The same
thing I have read in the book of Donald Kraig "Modern Magic".He says, that the
realization of the unity=realization to all our dreams.

For me,the first and the last definitions seem to be right. The Spirit is those
part of our self, that explains our connection with the Universe, the Absolute.
The Spirit drives us to strive for perfection and unity with the Universe/Ab-
solute/Divine.To expand ourselves and our consciousness to infinity.

So,what does the word "spirituality" really mean? And what does it mean for you?

Hmm? I'll just want to narrow this down to what this means in a person. Meaning having strength, as of not being so ill minded when something somewhat terrible bursts out. Also meaning one is flexible with others. Having strength? Being big enough to do one's task.

There isn't right or wrong spiritual work, there's just the work.

The definition that is relevant to the individual depends upon where they are in their development. Transpersonal psychology may propose a hierarchical model of spiritual development:
1. archaic- all lower levels of human development
2. egocentric- selfish point of view, unable to relate to perspectives outside of self. Magical reality (I alone determine my world experience).
3. conformist- conservative values/patriarchal/(represents about 30% of modern american society). Adherents to orthodox religous sytems are often found here.
4. Rational or individualistic- reductionistic, scientific materialism. World is an "it", (40-50%)
5. Pluralistic or multiculturalistic-universal care, civil rights, information age, but individual perspective remains intact (20-25%)
6. integral or wholistic- first awareness of unity or big pucture. Equally comfortable with all points of view or points 1-6 above/universal contributor (<2%).
7. Transpersonal- non-individualistic point of view (<<<0.001%)

The key point is that we all represent a mosaic of developmental levels. An individual may be functioning intellectually at a pluralistic level, but they may have the emotional maturity of pond scum (levels 1-2). All of us have strong conformist components to our belief systems, no matter how much we pride ourselves in being open minded. Developmentally, none of us 'start' at a higher level but must start at the beginning- and most of us have multiple episodes of starting back at the beginning (an individual may finally transcend a level in childhood or maybe in their 70s).
