What type of Yoga would you recommend for anyone getting started? I can´t decide between Hatha and Raja Yoga, I´ve practised Hatha for a few months and I enjoyed it, the thing is, my goal is mostly mental/spiritual growth and strenght, so in a way I feel Hatha Yoga was a little bit limited (we almost never did mental exercises). On the other hand, the condition of my physical body is not very good, i´m not flexible at all, do you think it´s worth it to start practising Raja Yoga without having a fit body first?

I've never tried Raja Yoga. I don't even know what it is. I have tried Hatha yoga and practice it every few months. It is very physical, but also mental and spiritual. While doing the posses, you get in touch with your body and your inner self. I would say it's just as spiritual as anything else. Since I know nothing of Raja Yoga, I have no idea how to compare it to Hatha. I personally think Hatha Yoga is as fulfill as any other spiritual act.

If you're goal is mental or spiritual growth and strength, I would recommend Kundalini Yoga.

Hatha Yoga - When I was 20 and all limber I gave myself a bulging disk performing the cobra posture. Blindingly painful, and I still suffer from sciatic (and other types of) pain on and off because of it. Recently I began practice again and the teacher had us doing some pretty advanced postures. He would really push us to get into correct position. Of course, this triggered my sciatic pain. I plan on atending "Gentle Yoga" or "Beginners' Yoga" classes once my pain clears up.

My point is that if you choose Hatha be careful with yourself. Don't allow a teacher to push you into doing something for which you are not ready. Back when I hurt myself initially during Cobra, it did not even seem to me that I was pushing myself at all.

I´ve already attended some Hatha Yoga classes, in the past, and one of the basic things our teacher would tell us was to never push too much, because doing whatever asana you are doing you are supposed to be relaxed... So I guess a good teacher will always remind you that... thanks for the advice even though.

I like to do a little Hatha now and then to keep limber. Raja yoga is the one I prefer for meditational purposes. Tame your mind! It can be difficult (mentally not physically) at first, but well worth the effort IMO. As far as physical conditioning goes there are always push up, sit ups and jogging, as well as other more physcal forms of yoga, such as ashtanga.
