We have been hacked

Post by Aladdin Sane »

It appears that someone has decided to play an april fools joke on us. We are working to fix the hacked banner & the page it links to, although I'm not usually the one who works with html, so we may have to wait. All of that aside, I don't find it completely tasteless considering the date and no loss of data (i've seen worse), it seems benign for the most part. Regardless, i am NOT encouraging this kind of activity, and it is, as the end of the day, illegal, however "artistically" it might perform itself.

Expect it removed shortly.

PS. It has been confirmed that no data has been damaged or removed from the hack.

If all they did was change a banner as an April's fool's joke then ok, I am just glad no posts where lost. I still do not see what is fun about running around and hacking other pepole's forums.

Bah, don't they know that most people on the internet are inherently impatient? As a direct result of such, I would assume most of the posters bookmarked occultforum.org/forum rather than the page they haked.

Oh my word, you go out for one evening at a charity fundraiser and what do you come back to?

I've checked all the logs, the banner and /index.html page were all that was changed. The system has been patched against the exploit that was used, but unfortunately the IP address belonged to a certain Russian network known for hiding the identities of its users, so unfortunately this can not be traced.

Oh Good Grief....how tasteless.

Some people just have to show you that they Can...hack you. I imagine the responsible parties are known to this forum, as well. That seems to be a pretty typical MO.

I am so sorry this happened.

Just because you happened to wind up at a charitable event dressed up as a giant bunny, doesn't mean it wasn't a drunken coincidence.

You will always have script kiddies, immature pepole who want to show of how "l33t" their computer skills is so they run around causing anoyance at various forums, they are really immature and really anoying.

I missed it. what was the banner changed to?

Personally, I say "no blood no foul". if they didn't harm any content, then I can't see taking it as anything more than an april fool's joke. nothing's ruined or vandalized really. actually it seems to have illuminated an exploit weakness of the forum, so it wouldn't be crazy to even say 'hey thanks'

didn't any of you ever TP someone's house?

It appears that I have missed the "prank" as well. However, my views are in line with Kath's. If no data was lost, it is of little concern.

omg, soo off topic, but I love that avatar LHoE. its very sort of mysterious, but at the same time there's a whole "talk to the hand" vibe in it hehehe.

not to mention that the most ancient form of art in cave paintings seems to have been handprints. so its quite occultic in that sort of primordial human prehistory way. I made some replica 'cave art' in art college, just as a study of it.

and i like the implied but not seen plate of glass there too.

k, done rambling shamelessly off topic there.

I'm pretty sure I know the group responsible, though won't name it here, some of whom I've spoken to in the past on OF.com and had some pretty interesting conversations with. I wouldn't say any fun was ruined, no destruction occurred, more like graffiti, although they seem to take the poetic mischief thing a little too far, obviously. If your reading, guys, I strongly advise against this kind of "statement" or whatever it was in the future. Graffiti seems harmless and can be passed off as art until your blue in the face, but it's not fun anymore once you get caught, now is it?

I agree with Kath on this one, although I wouldn't go so far as to thank them. lol
The banner was basically changed to a smaller clip of the larger image/page it linked to, which was a field of multicolored walruses (walrii?) surrounded by TV screens with certain sigils in them...a music track played alongside it that sounded something like hindu sitar but full of noise and errors in it. Uhh, if this was a statement of some kind, I'm stumped. I have the image saved but not sure I should paste it as it might just encourage them.
