Title: "Alone 1"
Artist: (me)
Media: Oil on Canvas
Size: 26 x 20 inches
Date: 2000
Not For Sale

Description:
Alone 1 is the first and most vivid in a series of three figure paintings titled "alone". In the alone series, I tried to imbue the figures with the mood or sensation of solitude. Alone 1 is painted from a live model, and took about 2.5 hours. Again, I find that my best works of art occur in surprisingly short periods of time, in gushes of focused empassioned creativity.

The alone series is inspired by the loss of my fiance in early 2000. Alone 1 was painted nearest these events, and is the best of the alone series. In the live pose, the lighting was actually quite different than in the painting. Alone 1 was also serving as an experiment in embellished lighting. The original pose was fairly striking, but really fairly neutral in terms of emotional content. I feel that the colors, space, lighting, etc. which I employed in the painting make it into something a great deal more than a snapshot of the pose I was painting from.

I do wish I could give the first name of the model, but I do not recall his name. I was unfortunately pretty brooding and introverted at the time. I try to give credit where credit is due, its a lot easier to make figure art with a good model. But whoever you are, thanks for the superb sitting.

Fantastic, I feel what you described. a little sad but breathtaking all the same.

A small growing flame in his right hand slightly lighting the background but still shadowing the face would be a nice touch and maybe a completely different idea.

hehe, the paint's been dry for years John.

Anyway, then it would be Magick 1, not Alone 1. which might be more interesting to members of this forum perhaps. The flame in his hand would make nice 'fantasy art', but it would dominate & override the human element which is what I was painting.

That theme has been so done and overdone it's actually quite pedestrian and your painting has all the trademarks of a young artist just learning their trade but since you stated that the paint has been dry for years it all makes sense now. I guess my question is "what are you painting now to affect/effect the world?" Of course opinions are like arseholes and everyone has one and I am no painter, quite honestly I can barely read a few labels on a gin bottle but these are observations I have.

I paint for me. not for art critics.
my art is very much take it or leave it.

But i've just got to ask, why you'd think that the human element has been overdone, but the fantasy-magic element hasn't?

Because I am both the fantasy and the fact

Kath, I think the painting is excellent, as well as the title of it.

Your use of shadowed darkness accentuates the 'aloneness' of the painting. The position of the model...creates the feeling of anguish, pain, and sobbing.

This is very well done and I am always a little in awe of your talent to put meaning and emotion into your paintings in such a way, that it is also transferred to the viewer as well.
