Putting yourself above your desire.

Post by Seth »

Latley, through experimentation i found that my results happen a lot faster and a lot smoother if i find a way to put myself above my desire.

When i say, putting myself above my desire, I mean putting myself in a state of mind where i look at my desire purely objectively, just about what it is, and not experiencing the actual feeling of desire.

For example, lets say that you do a working or whatever for some change. Once you have finished, instead of trying to forget what you want, as i find this causes problem, because if you try to forget something you will then in fact think about it more, like when somebody says "Don't think about an Elephant" you then think about an elephant. Instead of trying to forget, just stop caring. Because all the time you desire something, your not in control i don't feel, and you let your desire control you. You have to stop caring, you are allowed to think about it, as long as you don't desire it. This is where self-control comes in.

Not only this, to put yourself above your desire more, you need to feel that you deserve it. Whether you feel you deserve something or not is to do with your own morals and ethics, so if you feel you don't deserve something, you may need to adjust your morals and ethics to change this. I'm not quite sure if I can describe how to do that, but it basically has to do with the way you view yourself and other people.

Anyway, i thought this may be interesting for newbs, or anyone really who's having a hard time getting results or something to work.

mm, that seems pretty insightful to me.

Also, along quasi-NLP lines of thinking: if you "want" something, then implicit in the thought is the question of whether or not you can have it? which I think leads one to approach wants in a sort of submissive posture, which is not conducive to success in my opinion. Meanwhile if you have wants, but you regard them somewhat dispassionately, you can simply reach out and take them, no part of the psyche then plays out any internal subconscious drama about questioning if you can have it, whether you deserve it, etc. you simply act through your will.

but ya, I agree with you. I never thought about it before. I don't get to pick up entirely new thoughts regarding magical practice very often anymore, thanks :D

and yeah, i'm sure someone else has thought of this before at some point, but described as Seth did, it just 'sank in' better. I have noticed that in my path, which does focus on the dissolution of 'desire', that effectiveness did seem to follow dispassionate magical efforts. But I hadn't thought about 'why'.

It was my pleasure, Kath. I find a lot of people do not think about why something happens, only if it goes bad, how can they fix it. That kind of thinking does not encourage growth. Once you ultimately understand what you want, and how you can control your own desires and understand how you feel about your desires, it allows you realize them without doubt, worry and what i call, ethical filters.

I agree, and you also remain positive thru it all. By thinking negatively about 'how to fix it if something goes wrong'...that negative thought cancels out the positive one...or to me it does....JMO

Very true, and very well put. I think, somehow, both positive *and* negative emotions about your working can affect you adversely. Have to consider that.

All of this just really strongly reminds me of the principals of NLP.

Very nice text, a good point made. I'm pretty new to chaos magick and magick at all, and had the problem how to forget about a desire. Just remain calm and "scientific" about it, without desiring, is more realizable. Morals are another good point. Not believing in any sounds good, but it's hard to achieve for me. I'm walking towards it. In the meantime I try to make them as free and "borderless" as possible. So thanks for the Insight, it surely helped.
