A System of My Own?

Post by Rhanta »

What's black magic, white magic, witchcraft and chaos magic called? I don't know any definite classifications for them...should I call them 'magics'? I'm going to pertain to them as 'systems' in this Topic...

You see, my childhood friend and I are fans of fantasy-genre books and novels, and decided to make our own magic system (for fun) in form of a spellbook. But it's too...child-like (some sort of MMORPG spell list).

uhm, here's the point: can I make my own 'system'? I mean, is it legal for me to do that? I'm just 14 and I really want to try it out. Can someone tell me the do's and the dont's? o.o

The simple explanation: those are all just styles of magic; you can think of it like being different styles of martial arts. Yeah, they all pretty much teach the same end, but it's all done differently, with different philosophies, techniques, and self-imposed rules.

I enjoy the enire fantasy-genre too :) But you should know: for the most part, real magic isn't like in video games, books, or TV shows (though a few get it close). Basing it off of RPGs is fine just for fun, but you likely won't get very far with that.

Is it legal? Absolutely (though some 'purists' would probably berate you for it...), feel free to create your own system of magic. However... could you create a whole new tabletop RPG if you hadn't ever played one before? Probably not. I suggest you look into the different styles of magic, pick one or a few that you think fit your personality (or 'feel right'), and go with it. Study them, practice them, learn about magic. You're new, you'll come to understand what real magic is like after a while; having your own "style" will come naturally if you study in more than one system of magic.

Wow, so it really IS legal...and they're called 'styles of magic'. Wow, thanks for the reply ! This really helped me a lot, and will help me in the near future. :)

Modern law doesn't exactly worry itself with the Occult... considering most people think it's hogwash anyway. The only time the law would get involved is when your particular style would happen to cross other boundaries - such as live ritual sacrifice, destruction of others' property, illegal drug use, etc.

And "style of magic" is my own term. You'll notice I won't normally speak for the occult community as a whole, since I'm pretty much entirely self-taught.

Ahh...thanks for the additional info! And no, mine won't involve sacrifice or destruction of property or any other illegal stuff. XD So I guess that'll be okay?
