Pets and magic

Post by Vashta »

I saw a post mentioning cats on the thread about physical manifestation, and I had to share this, I thought it was probably worth a topic of its own, as I'd really like to hear other people's stories on the subject.

About a month ago, I got a kitten, and last night I did my first ritual with him in the room, when I started, after casting protection and sitting down to get to the rit, he climbed onto the altar, lay down by my workspace, put his paw on my hand, and sat like that for 5 minutes while I did my initial chants and such. This is something he has never done before, and while I appreciate that maybe it's a kitten-bonding thing, that he's just getting.. familiar* with me, I was pleasantly surprised by how appropriate his action was.

I just wanted to share that and ask if anyone else had some stories or insights to share on the topic of pets and magic.

My wife's cat won't cross into a cast Circle.
Quite happy to walk around it, but won't come in.

My mom's dogs don't have this problem. Walk right into to the circle, knocking my pine cones out of place. [stare]

Same with my three, they will respect the working space and stay out,but they sometimes interact in various ways otherwise and my cats are great for spotting weak points in my wards and tagging uninvited visitors that have slipped past my defences.

Dogs tend to get quite protective, despite the relative clumsiness when compared to cats, lol,if you've got activity of a spiritual or astral nature/origin they will react before the humans are aware of it,I often find.

That's interesting, I might have to try a smaller circle next time, lol, my circle was the entire room, so he was already inside when it was cast. He didn't go into the corners during though.. I wonder if I could put a circle around myself when I go to bed to see if it stops him trying to eat my feet off...

I remember reading in a few books over the years that it's ok for pets to cross the circle, although I can't remember where I read that, or what the reason behind the statement was. What do you guys think?

My bearded dragon is delightfully oblivious to everything that isn't a dark hole or a wiggling insect. XD Hasn't noticed my incorporeal lurker at all, unless that's why she's always staring at light bulbs, lol.

I'm looking into getting my first ever dog though, and I'm hoping that will prove interesting. =3

There's a lot of interesting folklore about dogs and magick.

M y gran told me that a black dog with a white chest blaze was special,as one had been blessed by St.Mungo, for some feat of bravery or spiritual protection [can't remember the whole tale, but I 'll go look later] and he touched it on the chest thereby causing a white cross mark to appear. The dog's descendants are also said to have inherited both it's blaze and it's gifts.

Nice story ,eh?

I've heard that, too, albeit including small children. I believe it's a Wiccan thing, having to do with the innocense of kids and moral neutrality of animals.
But then again, not being a Wiccan, I could totally be wrong. [geek2]
