Addon vote - Karma

Ok, acting on a suggestion by Nemus Amaranthi, we're taking a vote on whether or not to install a karma mod. this vote is currently open for 7 days, at the end of which we'll do the democratic thing, whatever it turns out to be All members of the forum are encouraged to have their say, and cast their vote. This could impact the community in undesirable ways, if it causes division among members, however it could also be a way to keep track of valuable contributions and reward members for the quality of their posts.

The link has a full feature list, but included here are a few key points:

Guests/bots can't karma
User can't rate same post multiple times
Karma will be enabled after x posts
Any user can opt out of the karma system entirely
Configurable time between karmas
Link to page from which karma was given at notifications
List of users with most karma
Anonymous karma feature. Who karmaed can see only administrators. (Configurable via ACP. Separate for increases and decreases)
Users can be banned by reaching minimum karma limit, eg -100
Karma ranks

I'm proposing that it be configured or modified so that voting, either up or down, also costs you a karma point. This is intended to keep it meaningful, and fair.

Voted 'no' since the other forum I'm in has something like this and some (both mods and others) like to use it as a popularity contest, posting stupid shit just since they know they'll get + points from it and so on. They also like to use it as 'LOOK everybody agrees with *that* side in this discussion since the lazy bastards can easily do that without bothering to write a word.

It's a good point - karma can't be treated as the absolute authority on how useful a commenter is to a thread, and can't be regarded as an absolute authority on a member's value at all, it's just.. a factor to take into consideration or disregard as you please. I think that we have a reasonably open and non-cliquey member base here, and it costing you a point to vote should discourage frivolous voting, but I do see that it's a fine balance to maintain, so I voted somewhere in between for now.

Not sure about the karma score for auto-ban. Could be good, in that if someone is an outrageous troll enough, they'd be banned by community vote, but again you'd have to really monitor for abuse of the system.

If nobody cared about how popular they (or others) were it wouldnt be a problem, but a lot do.. and its made a lot more visible if you have some sort of rating. I'd rather have a earned reputation for writing good posts, rather than (I just checked what I got a lot of 'points' for in there) a incredible bad pun, or smacking somebody unpopular, or stating the obvious.

I'm a little undecided here. I'm on a couple of forums that use this. One site calls it Karma and has negative and positive and the other calls it Frubals, but they only have positive.

I think it might be better if we don't use it, really. But that said, if we do do it and it turns out to be a bad idea, I think our mods, admin, etc. are smart enough to realize it and get rid of it without it overstaying it's welcome for too long.

Ofcourse, someone's karma is a bit subjective, too. Think of what might happen to somebody's karma if they make a post in a thread that covers a sensitive/contraversial issue. I'd mention the potential of lots of bad karma for the poor misunderstood genius whose ideas are underappreciated, but I just don't think that would happen here. We would probably more likely be the place where someone finally "got" him.

The karma thing....maybe, maybe, possibly....could become sort of a distraction. This is a really good forum based in ideas, discussions, conversations and knowledge. Adding karma might add more of a social distraction to the site. How much karma do I have? How much to they have? Why don't I have as much karma as him? Why doesn't anybody like me? Why doesn't anyone appreciate my posts?

I marked for maybe a different kind, though, on account of a possiblity that maybe we could have one that was a bit more fun. Something silly.
