what is ascension?

Hi hope this is the right place to post this,
I was wondering what the process of ascension involves and what it is exactly, I had thought previously that it was like a form of astral projection to a higher plane, but I googled it and there was all this stuff about your body transforming into a body of light so you disappear for days and ascend to kingdom of heaven or whatever, is this realistic?
the reason I was wondering is I've been considering getting christopher penczak's book ascension magick and I wasn't sure it would meet what I am looking for at this time

Ascension is, quite basically, the betterment of the self and a moving to a mental state of complete understanding and bliss. Ascended masters are people who have transformed to a degree that the physical world doesnt affect them, and they live in a state of being beyond the trials and stresses of the world around them.

As for a book telling you how to ascend - that must be a very clever book, or its just assuming that what one person considers ascension will work for everyone.
