Question on a book

Post by Drakinola »

Hey there,

I'm attempting to buy a new copy of The Lesser Key of Solomon, as my L. W. De Laurence version is, well, uncomplete.

I've just found a book on Amazon that seems to merge both the Ars Goetia and the Greater Key together into one copy, and having "looked inside", the book seems fine in terms of quality, and also regarding keeping to the original text.

I'd just like to know if anybody else has read this edition, or can link me to a review, as I'd rather be a bit more assured that it's not filled with babble before I fish out £11.69 for it.

Thanks.

I noticed a few things about the book that raise a questionable flag. One, the book is published from Createspace. From my own experience these self-publish groups don't have jack shit in terms of good books. It's a vast majority of people republishing things that are in the public domain trying to make a quick buck or if someone is using Createspace for their own work, it's been my experience that the books are poorly edited and a complete lack of fact checking. Two, on the title page the book gives an alternative title to the book as "Lemegetton". Well, this is a problem because the full, complete Lemegeton is five books, not two. So there is that. I personally think that Mathers' version of the Goetia is complete crap, horribly written (ok, yes I know he was only the translator and didn't write it himself, but still). I MUCH MUCH MUCH prefer the Crowley book "Illustrated Goetia". Far better in my opinion. The one thing I say Mathers' version is superior at is the illustrations of the spirits and sigils are better than the Crowley version, but honestly that's it.

Granted, Illustrated Goetia is only the lesser key (book 1 of 5) and doesn't contain any of the other books. It's really your call whether you want as many of the books contained into one book as possible vs better editions.

I'll stick with this edition for now, as it does seem to contain all of the books in good detail, along with good illustrations. Certainly won't be the best, but it seems like it'll do the job. I'll be comparing certain parts of the book with virtual copies of the individual editions to see how they stand up.

If it's really not up to the task, then I'll be sending it back for a refund, and writing a full review. The description only seems to say that it has the Ars Goetia and the Greater Key, which is false. Not sure if that description was given by somebody who's not knowledgeable in the book at all, or if it's just... fishy. Guess I'll find out.
