New Books New Directions

Post by fredd3039 »

I thought I would take the time to let everyone know what is going on at Nephilim Press these days. First of all, we have twenty new titles under contract. Our goal is to start releasing a new title every month. In order to reach this goal we had to fire our current printer and find a new one that could handle that type of output schedule. Our new printer can not only handle the output but they also offer services that allow us to push the physical design envelope of our new books and create truly unique tomes that will be aesthetically pleasing as well as informative. Another pleasant surprise from the new printer is cost. They offer more services for less cost than our old printer. That’s right, prices are going to come down. We recognize that it is very hard for most people to be able to purchase everything they want and need in todays world and we are happy to be able to add a little relief to our customers. We are going to be producing at least two editions of all of our works from now on that are going to be both affordable and beautiful. Our special editions will be offered on our website and our regular editions will be available online and in select retail stores. To everyone that has stood by us over the last three years and put up with our mistakes and growing pains I would like to say thank you and saving you money while offering you a better product is the best way that I know how to do this. The best to all of you my friends and patrons, and from the bottom of my heart… Thank you!
Sincerely
Frank Redd

I thought we had a thread in the Bazaar section about Nephilim, but I was wrong.

I think it would be handy to have one with a link to the online site.I know I'd be interested in less expensive book editions and I'm sure that this news will tempt other members also. [thumbup]

Awesome news! I've had my eye on a few titles in the forthcoming section for awhile now. I was wondering if these books were ever going to be released [lol]

So when are you getting your website figured out? I've been waiting for news on the Saint Cyprian book for a while. When do you expect to be able to meet your production schedule?

There is a reason why we don't/can't post dates on our site. Some of those books that are contracted are still in the writing phase and we have no control over when we can get them. That is up to the author. As far as when we get a book, turnaround into a printed bound book can be anywhere from 4 to 16 weeks. Heres an example. A 200 page book written by a competent author will take three weeks in proofreading and editing, 3 weeks in layout and 4 to 6 weeks to print. A 200 page book written by a first time author who doesn't have good flow and a horrible sense of grammar will require 5 weeks in editing and 3 weeks in layout and 14 to 16 weeks to print. Add 20 images to this book and put in maybe another week in layout. What about a 400 page book. Double the editing and layout times. People call in sick, add afew days. The proofs show a missed typpo. Uh oh back to editing and then to layout to correct the problems, here goes a few days. Damn it the paper roll jammed on the production line, here goes some more days. etc... etc.... ect....

There are too many variables to take into consideration for us to give concrete times. The St. Cyprian book is about 600 pages and involved a team of researchers and editiors. It ws also written originally in Portugese and then translated into English. We contracted The Cyprian Book three years ago when it only had one chapter finished. See what I mean. Too many variables. Now I know what you are thinking. Why not wait to put it on your site until its finished. Thats easy. Advertising. We are a small press and cant afford large cardboard cutouts in stores and magazine adds. We rely on traffic to our site seeing the forthcoming section and then checking back often. When you check back often you see our other books that are available and hopefully you will se one you like.

whew! Thats a mouthfull. Anyway I hope this sheds some light on the issue. I am not trying to mislead anyone and we are not brain damaged. We just cant list accurate dates. If we did and the book did not come out ontime like Azazel. We have people sending us tone of emails calling us liars and all sorts of crazy things. I even had a guy acuse me of holding back a books release on purpose. I reminded him that my money is what prints these books and why the hell would I want my money sitting idly by in a pallet of books. He agreed that he was wrong to judge. When reading this please keep in mind that I am not angry. Some people tend to think my responses are me responding in anger. I assure you I am always happy to answer questions from anyone at anytime. Feel free to ask away.

My husband and I are DINKS with a mutual love of rare occult books. We don't blink at a $1500 price tag on a book if we can plan for it, but failing to update your website makes it hard for us to plan for purchases from you. It behooves you, as the publisher, to list as accurate as information as available. Your website still shows the St. Cyprian book as "Originally scheduled to be released summer of 2013. Book is ahead of schedule so we anticipate an earlier release date." Well, it's the middle of July. If the purpose of the website is to serve as advertising, you are advertising to me that you are a dead press that doesn't update its website, and that I should not drop a large chunk of cash on a book from you. Think of it that way.

You are absolutely right about the St. Cyprian book. I will change it now. Any other ideas please keep them coming. I am trying to make everything better for my customers and all input helps. It is all constructive as far as I am concerned. What about a forum at Nephilim Press where customers can come and see updates and Authors can post about their books and we can do regular updates ion books status and progres. I would like to have that but I don't know if people would take advantage of it. What do you all think? I will post this on some other forums and see what the consensus is.

A forum might be helpful. A Twitter feed might be helpful, too, and you could use it to advertise the used books you're trying to pick up, maybe.
