Help with sigil
Help with sigil
Ok, I'm an absolute noob when it comes to sigil magic but I would like to try it out. Are there any preparations that one must make before starting with this? Also, how exactly do you cast it? How do you know you've reached that state of trance when you're expected to release the sigil? Does it work if you dont fully 'forget' what your sigil was all about?
I know these are mundane questions, but any information would be welcome!

Re: Help with sigil
First of all, You don't do magic for the purpose of testing magic itself.
Magic requires belief, and a test would exclude belief.
I don't have more info to help you, except what i shared above.

I've been wondering about this too.How do you know you've reached that state of trance when you're expected to release the sigil?
Re: Help with sigil
Cast many sigils, try different methods, keep a journal, record the sigils, outcome, context and sensations, you'll find the appropriate(s) method(s).
"Does it work if you dont fully 'forget' what your sigil was all about?" Do you mean you cannot forget the purpose of the sigil while charging it or afterwards?
In the first case, maybe your sigil is too explicit. You can change your design method or charge multiple sigils so that you do not focus on one specific intent.
In the latter case, I think it's hard to completely forget about the sigil, if it happens you should be able to quickly direct your thoughts on another subject. If this turns to be impossible it could be that the sigil is not the best method or the intent is not good. Alternatively you can try a servitor.

Re: Help with sigil
I have no intention of testing magic, if I didn't believe in its existence I'd feel real dumb being part of an occult forum. All I want to test is my capabilities, whether I can work a sigil successfully or not. Besides, chaos magic is pretty new compared to some of the other practices. So it helps to test something and know if its legit. Every body, including you in sure, goes through the trial and error stage before being a believer...IO-Andrei wrote:First of all, You don't do magic for the purpose of testing magic itself.

Re: Help with sigil
Thank you for responding. I think you're right about performing different sigils and finding out what works for me, I'll do that. Thanks! Is there a limit to how many we can do in a given week or so? Or any particular time? No books or online pdfs mention anything about moon phases when it comes to sigils.Urscumug wrote:Cast many sigils, try different methods, keep a journal, record the sigils, outcome, context and sensations, you'll find the appropriate(s) method(s).

And yup, I meant forgetting the purpose. It's not like Im constantly reminded of it, but I'm aware of it lurking at the back of my mind now and then. Would that affect the result?
Re: Help with sigil
Moon phases is part of the context and their effect is relative to any individuals. Maybe a full moon helps to reach gnosis, maybe not, check.
I don't think it's very good when the sigil intention comes too often to the surface. If this happens and the sigil fails, I would restart with an indirect, emotionally lighter intent or with a servitor.
Let's say that your intention is to loose weight, it will be difficult to forget about it, so you can instead direct multiple intents on minor targets that contribute to the extra mass, like not eating butter nut or ice cream, doing more sport, etc.
Using servitors is another alternative, I've not much experience with them, but basically it's a trick that allow you to delegate the work to a semi independent emanation of yourself. You give it some tasks like "break every butter nut jar that enter the house" and it will do the work even if you think about it.
Finally, keep in mind that sometimes your unconscious may fight against your will because it does not represent your true desire. My point of view is that the specification of the intent is the hardest and most important part of the whole sigil process.

Re: Help with sigil
I feel that your problem may be in cultivating the right mindfulness. Gnosis (spiritual knowledge) or wuzhi (knowing without knowing) are difficult, if not impossible, to fully possess. In fact if someone is 100% sure of something especially if it is a transcendental nature, they are most likely mistaken. Lucky for us, there are countless techniques we can use to cultivate this sort of mindfulness.
A journal, if you are not already keeping one, is almost imperative. What is the relation between your reality and your mental, physical, and spiritual states? Recording spiritual and mental data will help you to understand these correlations. Don't limit yourself to formal prose. write in poetry or prose, words or glyphs, draw images, or whatever fits your present situation. Plagiarize, paraphrase, scribble -- do whatever it takes to allow your unconscious to express itself.
Meditation and journaling are likely to improve your results. Do them every day.
While there are no prerequisites for sigil creation, contemplative meditation and keeping a magickal journal are foundational to almost any magickal endeavor. Contemplative meditation can be anything from going on walks, creating art, fasting, guided meditation, or anything that meshes with your current paradigm. Taking the time to notice your mental, physical, and spiritual state will go along way to help you become more mindful. Are there any preparations that one must make before starting with this?

You will never fully know, nor will you ever fully forget. I suspect that knowing and feeling are one in the same, or at least a part of a larger continuum. Again, daily journaling and meditation will help you to better know yourself and to hone your ability to detect when you have reached a sufficient state of trance or forgetting. How do you know you've reached that state of trance when you're expected to release the sigil? Does it work if you dont fully 'forget' what your sigil was all about?
