Ogham Magical Use

Post by Manannanson »

Does anybody here use Ogham for magical workings? If you do, how? And I don't mean divination but spells, hexes, charms, etc.

The system of the Agnaw (which I am a practitioner of) uses symbols that are very similar to the Ogham. One can use these in somewhat similar fashion, by drawing one randomly in regards to a divination, and choose the fitting symbol (based upon it's meaning) for a particular magical working. One can use these upon talismans, and amulets in the normal way, in order to employ them. There are various works on Rune Magic, that I believe you can use to obtain further ideas.

@ Manannanson:
You may take a look into Jan - Fries "Helrunar"
http://de.scribd.com/doc/196841322/Helrunar-Jan-Fries

He goes into the development of the european letter systems in a rather good manner and is a good research addition. The book may have its focus on runes, but the general part regarding the use of them will be the most interesting part for you. I recommend to take a look. The thing is that not much is known about Ogham in particular since most of them were put on wood and wood is an organic substance and therefore rather fragile when it comes to survive over several hundred years. Many things from the modern use are new interpretations, keep that in mind when you work witht them and someone tries to back himself up with "original druid ogham" or such crap.

I did a quick google to see what an Ogham was. It's an ancient Irish alphabet. http://www.ancientscripts.com/ogham.html

I'm of the opinion that when using ancient alphabets, and especially runes, having a good understanding of the culture in which they were created is important.

Well, the Ogham weren't exactly runes, however they have some things in common like their place on wooden sticks. Also runes were often put on wood, like Tacitus reported, however you all know the problem with wood and time... it does not last for long.
