Ok... I just cant meditate... I don't understand it, nor can I attempt it. I dont know what I'm supposed to be doing even though people say all this concentration and silence and I just dont understand it what so ever. I dont know what I'm supposed to feel or how to even realise I am meditating. help? anyone? PWEEZE i give cookie

The goal of meditation is to reach a state of absolute calm. Just sit or lay down and take deep breaths. Feel the air going into your lungs all the way down and back out again. Focus on that and nothing else. This should completely clear your mind.
Another way to meditate is to think on one thought and no other. Let that thought be the only one in your mind.
These tips really helped me when I first had trouble with meditation~<3

Thing is, you could always try the method recommended in Liber Null. Which is to do "something" to reach gnosis. Too tired at the moment to write a proper answer. I'll get back to you in a few hours.

It be also helpful to know the reason why you want to learn meditation. There are a lot of different forms of mediations for different goals.
You can always start with the basics though find a quiet time/place, a comfy place to sit back straight feet and arms uncrossed, comfy clothing. Close your eyes and relax. do this for a max of 5 minutes daily preferable at the same time and in the same place.
There are many methods to help you relax look for one you like and just do it.

I do have a PDF of Liber Null somewhere but I dont have access to a computer at home I'm pretty much in the dark ages in my house and only have access at a library and what i can hold on my USB stick. Go take a long walk in the woods or a park. Sit by the water.

If you can't turn off that voice in your head maybe you need to listen to what it's trying to say to you.

Meditation, at it's most basic, is just turning your mind in on itself. As soon as you're sitting down and paying conscious attention to your own thoughts, you're starting to meditate. The more advanced states people talk about require a lot of time and effort to reach, so don't worry if you don't sit down and immediate feel an overwhelming calm or bliss or energy or whatever, it doesn't mean you're doing it wrong, just that you need to work for it.
I'd recommend trying to find classes in your area if you can, I found it much easier to learn once I had someone sitting in front of me showing me what to do, instead of trying to make sense of instructions from a book or website. Just shop around a little and find somewhere that seems legitimate and doesn't want to rip you off with exorbitant fees.

If your your trying to stop the voice your in trouble it will fight you and you will just get frustrated. I honestly don't think it every stops you just move your focus into another area of you consciousness. A lot like when daydreaming or reading/watching something interesting and you are zoned out on it.Trakab

Don't be worried if you are there yet it is more important to do it. Like Rin said it takes some time to get there but literately you will be there before you know it.
If you even accomplish a few seconds of not thinking it is a great accomplishment for a beginner.

The reason I said to pick a relaxation technique to do is the more relaxed you are the calmer your mind will be and the easier to shift focus to different states such as no- thinking.

You dont need to sit still and be quiet in order to meditate - you could do some kind of active pursuit, like dancing or exercise; basically any action that you dont need to use your mind for. I used to know a guy who meditated while carving up sides of beef in a meat processing factory - basically any action you can 'switch off' to can be turned into a meditative trance.

Well the main reason I want to learn is for astral projection and Binuaral beats. I've tried multiple techniques that you all have suggested or linked to and I still just cant stop the mind chatter. You don't need to meditate for binaural beats. What you do need is a good pair of headphones. There's a huge difference between the $10 ones and the $100 ones. Earbuds don't work at all with them.

Both zoning out and falling asleep are actual signs that you doing something right. When this happens you are shift your awareness to a different state then normal consciousness .The problem is that for most people the only time this happens are when we are tired or going to sleep so are mind are trained to turn off. For the falling asleep aspect of things make sure your seated in a way that your head nods or your hand falls down to wake you or some similar thing and don't worry if you do fall asleep and you wake right away just continue some of my best meditations have happened after this has happened.
Control will come the more you shift into different states while awake you slowly will bring more of your waking consciousness with you.
It's also helps to record what happened after the meditation and dreams too. This helps you to remember after the fact at first it will be like a dream and it will fade from your mind fast.
In my opinion the biggest factor in the chatter is that your too focus on stopping it. Instead just simply acknowledge it and move back on to what your doing like nothing happened.
It is easier to do this in short periods then as you get better move on to longer periods. when I say short I mean short like I said start with two minutes it takes time ,if your in a rush like most, do it when ever you can but have at least one planned period each day and do it every day.This is all training your mind if you only do it once in a while it won't do any thing you will always have the same problems and if you just let yourself do it during your mediation that's what your teaching your mind to do when you meditate. Your trying to make habits out of these techniques so you do it automatically.
As for binaural beats after using lots of them I don't really recommend them most are not very well done and prolonged use kinda screws with the nervous system. The only ones I can say that weren't bad was most of the gateway series from the Monroe institute for a couple reasons first most of the sessions don't really mess to much with the nervous system as long as you move slowly through the levels and they are scripted to be of use with out the audio's.

I figured I would throw my hat in this thread too. One of my main problems with meditation is the fact that I always have music playing in my head. There is rarely a time where this isn't the case. It probably doesn't help that I often listen to a lot of music anyway. While I've had some satisfying meditations, i'm wondering if this problem would keep me from going deeper. If so, what other ways could aid me in quieting my mind?

You may try to reduce you music consumtion over the next few weeks and observe what happens. According to Bardons "Initiation into Hermetics" "reducing the input to your head also reduces the output", meaning reducing the amount of information makes it easier to have a disciplined mind as it is not that distracted anymore. I tried it myself and it worked, but it is pretty boring.

Search for it and you'll find 10-15 minute videos that will guide you through a meditation. just follow their instructions.

What i NEED to mention is that, meditators who first stat NEVER have the effect they wand, and that is because there LUST to feel something THEY WAND.
don't have any expectation. just begin without a result in mind. if thoughts pas let them pass, look at them like you would watch a movie.
slowley come back to your breath.
another powerful tool for me is stillness, (first remember stillness is the polarity of sound) so no sound = no stillness
learn how to lissen to stillness, nothingness, void, darkness. instead of what you already now = sound
between every sound is stillness
you will feel effect in some time, you will also face the time you will say; why i do this ? i don't want this? this is worthless time use. or Jou wil make the illusion yourself that you don't have the time. just USE YOUR FIRE(WILL) to keep on continuing, accept every tention you feel, your body will fight because it is not used to be in a meditative state, just let the struggle be struggled, calm will find it self. try to reach that moment as much as possible.
try to keep it as long as possible, train it. you will notice that sometimes thought are not that what they seem to be, but you need to see and feel the different between ego thoughts and thyself expressions (self conversation with the higher you, the untouched child).

This is not frighting, the crying that comes along with the pain ( see it as your earth(body) manifesting true spirit with the fire (will) touching the waters,tears(emotions) to experience air (solidity/ air is very flowing so it is a relief, a blockage you face, you accept, you recognize, you understand, you know its part , you know it fools,tricks and dissolute you. air is the power you can use to bend emotions or for me it dos( its like aire are thoughts,. Still not manifested, holding a thought profound and consistent change the way you feel, (the way you feel change the way you think) observe it. . and comprehend it/ don't ignore it or isolate it. accept it and balance it with the polarity of it
