i was looking at demon sigils in some demonolatry books (keys of ocat, to be specific) and it got me thinking. first, take a look.
it seems to me these look like signatures. like imagine a demon walks into a bar.. and at the end of his stay he signs this on his check.
that got me thinking. for certain, these images were drawn by a human somewhere, and then we can go on for a few days about how "thought comes from another dimension" and how "thought can be influenced by other things in the other dimension" but ... is that it?
When you create a sigil you take different letters and combine them into a single symbol.
The reason why they look like a signature is because just like a signature they are a combination of letters.
I saw this in one of my books. I can't remember which one. Maybe it was something to the effect of converting the name to numbers, and then drawing a line through the numbers on a magick square. Enochian maybe?

Many many moons ago, the early sages wanted a reliable way to contact and consistently work with specific spirits. The ancient spirits sat down with the ancient sages and they devised what would become what we call sigils, where they essentially gave a signature to humans that was a pictographic representation of the spirit and acted as a sort of phone number to directly contact the spirit. This continued and spread among both humans and spirits, and now, if you ask any spirit for their sigil, they pretty much all have more than one (some being more powerful, more accurate representations of them than others) or know how to make one and which one you get depends on your relationship with the spirit. Some spirits like humans more than others.
The system of chaos style sigilcraft was developed somewhat more recently, and even the "kabbalistic" system of numerology based sigils on Magic Squares is recent in comparison. You can go back much farther and see Hieroglyphic representations of gods and spirits that can be used like sigils, and were the early version of the fancy spirit signatures we use today. The comparison to signatures isn't wrong, by the way. The primary reason Bardon teaches Automatic Writing is so that you can let a spirit control your hand, and draw their sigil exactly as it should be for them. In that sense, it is very literally a signature.
The sigils of Demonolatry, specifically the Dukante sigils were channelled by Demonolators in the past. The same goes for the enns. Even though the Dukante sigils may have slight variations the enns have always remained the same. It is said that the enns from private grimoires of different families from around the world were the same when they were discovered.
By the way don't mix up the Dukante and Goetic hierarchies. The former is completely different and should I say more respectful towards the demons. Modern Demonolators have now started working with the Goetic hierarchy. Look for Purswell's book on the matter.

Eek! I went to a class last week where we were each advised to say a positive affirmation. After a few days I sigilized mine and I've got it in front of me right now, and it looks just like a very simplified version of that Belial seal, except it's the other way up. I don't look at the goetic seals very often.
I think this kind of thing has got to factor into this discussion somewhere!
lol
but anyway, general consensus seems to lean towards influence and automatic writing, by the looks of it. guess i wont get any different theories than this anyway
S Connolly is one of the most prominent figures of Demonolatry in today's scene. She is a High Priestess and a member of the OTS. Her 'The Complete Book of Demonolatry' is the go to book for Demonolators. She is very straightforward and open minded in my opinion. In her forum I posted a thread about where I can get the aforementioned book for free. She replied by 'thanking' me for not pirating the book which doesn't cost much [blush] . Then one of her friends who knows why I can't buy her books gifted it to me. If anyone is interested in Demonolatry that book is a must read.

No kidding. They are potent energy signatures. Once I took one of my headphones and put it on the sigil of one of the demons I worked with, to make him listen to a song. Soon he came to my house and had a chat with me [lol] .
