In Defense of the Setian Tradition

Post by Hadit »

Many people question whether the modern Setian tradition is valid and in line with Egyptian myth. There's no doubt that the Temple of Set has a lot of satanic influence, but they are certainly grounded in Egyptian belief as well. I will be as brief as possible and address further questions in thread.

To start, Set was a god associated with deification before the third dynasty. Set was associated with Ursa Major, where it was believed deified souls ended up residing after death, representing the continuation and power of the psyche.

Second, the Adze tool represented Set / Ursa Major was extremely important in the Opening of the Mouth Ceremony, which was necessary for continuation of the self after death once for cult of Osiris rose.

Third, Set plays an extremely important initiatory role in the contending of Heru and Set. Set makes Osiris a god in the first place, and his actions lead to Isis doing magic, Horus being born, and even Thoth coming into existence. Sets action result in these stagnant forces becoming deities, making him arguably the most powerful and important being even in this Osirian myth.

Fourth, Set was understood as the slayer of Apep, the serpent of nonexistence and delusion. Set therefore was the being responsible for continually pushing against delusion, chaos, etc. Set allowed for continued growth and change.

Finally, we come to the Coptic creation story of the Felling of Apep, in which all the deities, Set included, help vanquish Apep. This is where modern Setian tradition picked up from, a creation story where all the gods are needed for existence. There is the static of Osiris, order of Horus, nurturing of Isis, future of Thoth, and so on. All the god have their roles here, and Set is that necessary being, free from the other constraints of the universe, who can consciously do battle with Apep to uphold order, stasis, the future, etc.
