The planetary energies are specific currents and are related to the elements and the zodiac. You should work with all of them together and individually. Different energies will be more or less difficult or effective depending on the individual.

Is planetary magick similar to other types of magick(effectiveness and difficulty)?

Planetary magic is the basis for all other magic.
In daily life you use the calendar to set up meetings and to know which days you should work and which days you should rest.

I been working with planetary iconography and some simple elements of PM within Chaos Magick, not only to set rituals by the most auspicious day to them to occur but to have in hand a full catalogue of how classify and manipulate energies from different qualities and aspects, that catalogue could be the planets or the zodiac archetypes. I do like too that the planetary archetypes are real key archetypes by wich you can access many other archetypes that may work better for you.
By my experiences I noticed that's very favorable to maintain a certain cyclical chain of rituals by wich you can use the energy source from mental-temporal cycles, like a conditioning session for soothe your reality by molding it in a slowly and very subtle way.

I know people practice it on its own, but its also a foundational practice within many different systems of magick. For example, in hoodoo many people use planetary phases and seals for gris-gris and other sympathetic workings. And if done correctly it's very effective. Even just learning the days, hours, and correspondences of the different planetary spheres can make your spellwork more efficient and powerful. A really simplified version of this would be doing combative magic on Tuesdays (Mars), love magic on Fridays (Venus) etc.
