Prefered size of tarot decks
Original post: pride_is_a_virtue
background: A close friend of mine collects tarot deck. For next christmas I am going to be creating a tarot deck for her using photographs I've taken.
So the question is, what dimensions are most practical for tarot decks? (btw, i'm canadian so metric would be very nice)
Thanks in Advance.

Actually it would be better for her to make her own deck rather than you making it for her. I wouldn't even create a deck for my husband, or best friend or even my kin. If you create a deck be it for yourself not for somebdy else. That's my personal opinion having custom decks made.
However I would use something not too big
9cm x 13cm - 12cm x 18cm is the size I'd make them if it were me.

I agree with Dracophoenix (I usually do
) when she says it's not the best idea. However, I will also say that I am most comfortable with the size of the Thoth deck I own. I have no rule to hand so I'm afraid I can't give dimensions, but I'll briefly explain why I feel that way...
The cards are larger than ordinary playing cards which helps me appreciate the 'importance' of what I'm holding in my hands. I regularly play card games and with my Rider/Waite deck, which is the same size as ordinary playing cards, I have no special feeling when handling them. They could just as well show the Ace of Clubs or Mrs. Bun the Baker's Wife until they are overturned. This is purely psychological but it is still important to me. Even the tiny boost of a larger sized deck contributes to the perceived significance of what I am about to perform. It helps my physical perceptions 'get in line with' the other preparations I have made prior to performing the reading.
That probably seems trivial to some of you, or even weak-willed of me, but it makes a great difference for me personally and I'll take almost any help I can get

Stay on topic.
2.2cm = 1in. for those not accustomed to the metric system.

I think this is an excellent idea, personally. I love the idea, I love the potential. The very thought of it makes me all happy and tingly.
Dracophoenix, would you care to explain why it wouldn't be a good idea to make a deck for someone else? I'm of the mind that if you don't give me a reason "why," I'm still going to do it anyway.
If it's a matter of the "energy" being wonky or whatever, that's easily fixed. Seriously, you have two Chaotes working on the deck. Etheric modulations are not even an issue. Energetic attunements are simple things to replicate and employ.

Sigilize her name and integrate it into the back, then they will work for her very well indeed. Having said that, I prefer the bigger cards... about the size of the Arthurian Tarot. I would provide a link, but it is out of print (just found that out... glad I have a set).

After discussing this with pride, I was thinking that I'd like a deck like this for myself. There could also be people in the city/province who may want a copy of the deck as well. Decks are printed in mass quantities, and people buy them and use them effectively. I don't understand how our making of a deck would be any different.

I simply commented that it's best to create a deck for yourself rather than somebody else. I personally would not make one for anybody but myself because it's to personal an item.
It partly has to do with energy plus items and tools of power or of an occult nature are best made for the individual by the individual themselves. Nobody knows you better than you know yourself and by creating your own items you are putting a peice of your soul, spirit, heart and lifeforse into it. By making it for yourself it's already attuned to you. You can not screw up on something for yourself. Your body even the spirtual side does not reject itself. It's not like having somebody make you a custom costume for cosplay in which a perfect stranger could do that for you. Also there is a more personal feel and satisfaction and pride in creating your own items such as tarot cards. By creating your own deck you attune it for what purpose you might have.

Alrighty, so not making decks for other people is a personal preference.
*lightbulb goes off*

I disagree. What about crystals? People don't make crystals for themselves. Same with chalices, pentacles, swords, daggers, altars, statues of deity, candles, incense. I understand what you're trying to say, and I respect that. I just do not believe it to be Universally true in all cases. I do believe that this is not set in stone, that the rules governing items of occult natures can be bent, broken, and re-written.

Yeah, but remember. There's two Chaotes working on it. We can change personal attunements. It's really not hard. If I had a dime for every time I've changed a personal attunement to a physical object ... I could afford coffee every morning from the vending machines at University. Energy can be dissolved back into chaos, and new patterns can be extracted/replicated.

I agree with you. When you do create something for yourself, it is strongly attuned to you. It becomes that much more potent. I'm just saying that just because it does attune itself to you, doesn't mean it must remain that way. All things change, this is something we accept in the practice of magick. And in magick, we get a say in how things change.
Certain things I'd agree with you on. I live in a appartment. I don't have a kiln, an area for lapidary work, a forge or any of those other cool things like that. However I do create spirit items and put them into a physical items. There is also clay on the market that uses a regular oven or microwave as a kiln that I think is cool.
Rin, I understand and respect your opinion as well.
