You might want to start off understanding Hermes, as understood by the ancient Greeks, try to get a sense of what the myths mean to you.

Hermes was equated with Thoth, as when Greece dominated a region like Egypt, it noted whether certain gods could be seen as connected to their own. The Hermetic traditions, the Corpus Hermeticum, are from the reflections of those who saw Hermes and Thoth as connected to various esoteric teachings.

After understanding Hermes from ancient Greek myths, you might then want to look at the Corpus Hermeticum (Hermetic Corpus) and see if it resonates with you, as well.

Or you may wish to start there. (You can find the texts here online: http://www.gnosis.org/library/hermet.htm)

hi
'dominated' i think thats rather a sweeping statement lol, well the greeks had equated most of their gods with egyptian ones during the 500's BC; when Herodotus visited egypt, while it was NOT under greek occupation; egypt was not conquered until 331 or 332 BC by Alexander. so several hundred years between the eqating of the two pantheons, some of the similarities seem superficial at best.

hermes is a messenger of the gods; tho i must confess my knowledge on him is not as well founded as that of thoth. thoth was no messanger; tho he was the master of writing and magic. if i am right was hermes slighty mischievious? thoth never showed such a temperament bar once when he tricked khonsu into playing him at a game. other than that he seems rather more straight laced lol.

well hope this is of some use

Both Hermes and Thoth were/are psychopomps, guiding souls of the dead to the afterlife.

nebhotep, thanks for the correction.

Alexandria was a fascinating place, and the interaction between Greek and Egyptian culture is a fascinating subject. You are right to point out that cultural contact and communication/transmision occurs before invasions and the like, and that these influences play a role too. It is easy to focus too much on the results of warfare and conquerors.
