"the law of
the strong:
this is our law
and the joy
of the world." AL. II. 2

"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law." --AL. I. 40

"thou hast no right but to do thy will. Do that, and no other shall say nay." --AL. I. 42-3

"Every man and every woman is a star." --AL. I. 3
There is no god but man.
1. Man has the right to live by his own law-- to live in the way that he wills to do:
to work as he will:
to play as he will:
to rest as he will:
to die when and how he will.

2. Man has the right to eat what he will: to drink what he will:
to dwell where he will:
to move as he will on the face of the earth.

3. Man has the right to think what he will: to speak what he will:
to write what he will:
to draw, paint, carve, etch, mould, build as he will:
to dress as he will.

4. Man has the right to love as he will:-- "take your fill and will of love as ye will,

when, where, and with whom ye will." --AL. I. 51 5. Man has the right to kill those who would thwart these rights. "the slaves shall serve." --AL. II. 58
"Love is the law, love under will." --AL. I. 57

Thelemic Glossary: Code of Ethics (Liber OZ)

Thanks for posting these Glossary topics again NuHad :)

Liber OZ

The subject has come up from time to time. Some argue that the Law is impossible to live by, that it sanctions murder, that it creates chaos, etc. Personally I find it quite beautiful and liberating. It feels perfectly natural to me yet still amazing that someone thought this out and wrote it down - in the same way as, even though we never fell off the planet prior to Newton's explanation of Gravity, those laws were a major landmark in human understanding.

I would like to know what you all feel about this Law? Pros and Cons welcomed :)

93 Caradoc!

The way I see it is that it is too simple be of use on a societal level. It puts too much on the shoulders of ever person...in a collective sense. However, I think on an individual level it works as well as any other imposed code. It has its drawbacks, as you indicated above (people can justify anything through OZ). I know I have said this everytime this topic comes up but since this is all "new" again here we go: For me the power of OZ is not in what to expect from others but what others should expect from me. That's when it gets really hard, IMVHO.

All good points, but I would just like to add to the quoted portion: also what I should expect from myself, both on a purely personal level and in relating to others.

Liber Oz is a statement of basic human rights.... a starting point. however to me it seems that any community of necessity will negotiate its own local laws and customs to avoid endless conflict and deliberation about petty things like whether Bob had the right to eat the last tub of yogurt.... or that has deprived Sally of her right to use the last tub of yogurt in her installation piece... or it has deprived Frank of his nightly face pack. communities quickly develop their own agendas and wills (quite seperate from the personal wills of their members) and to participate in a community often involves making compromises and assuming certain responsibilities.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Liber Oz... I can't tell you how much I love it. I have lived by it's principals long before I read it. These are simple rules yes but because they are simple does not make then easy. Also just because you have a right to do something it does not mean you have the right to avoid the consequences of your actions. You have the right to drink 3 bottles of Jack but you can't escape from the fact your going be puking your guts out soon afterward

Let's take the yogurt example. (and I'm going to paraphrase one of Crowley's comments here)

There is only one person who's true will is to use the yogurt, the others are mistaken. So who gets the yogurt? FIGHT FOR IT! "As brothers fight ye!" AL 3:57 Now this doesn't mean take out your 9mm and shoot the bastard. But fight as you would fight a loved one so to speak.

Now lets take gay marriage for an example "Man has the right to love as he will:" Now the government thinks it their will to prevent it.. now what? "As brothers fight ye!" How do you fight the government in a brotherly fashion? You can protest, vote in people who support your position, Get laws changed etc..

OK time for #5 Man has the right to kill those who would thwart these rights. That's the one that really gets people ;) Remember Liber Oz was first published shortly before the U.S. joined the second world war, Hitler was at the very least thwarting the rights of millions of people when it was written. I don't think you will find many people who would disagree with trying to kill Hitler.

But in every day life the word "kill" still seems a bit.. much. But really the word kill is a metaphor for doing whatever you can to stop those who would thwart these rights. But why did he use the word kill???? Take a look at Liber Oz one more time. Ill wait........................

There is one thing about it that is very diffrent from other things Crowley wrote, do you see it? He wrote Liber Oz for everybody, from the ditch digger to the Professor of a collage, so he wrote it in words of one syllable so everyone could understand it. (As it turns out he was disappointed and a bit perplexed on how many people did not understand) And "kill" is a simple word than means to stop "right now" no matter what.

Alright I'll shut up now :D

Love is the law, love under will.

93,

Great post Frater. Now, Crowley also claimed to have written Liber IV for everyone and we know how straight forward that one is!
