Sorry, in order to use the squares you need to be in contact with your holy guardian angel.

Thats in the first and second book. The 3rd book is a trap. Meeting your HGA (Holy Gaurdian Angel) takes at least 6 months.

if the third book is a trap (and further, what's a trap?), why has it even been translated and released to the public?

Well, there are several methods, one is through enochian magick after you pass through the abyss you're holy guardian angel appears, than there is Crowley and Mather's way. Try reading "21st Century Mage" by Jason Augustus Newcomb he simplifies the workings of the Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel in "The Sacred Magick of Abremelin the Mage" I believe.

I wouldn't say that the 3ed book is a trap. From all accounts it is very usable once you follow the entire system. The only problem is most people are unable to follow it to the letter. But on the bright side there are other easier ways of contacting your HGA.

Note - an "easier way" does not denote no effort, just less complicated. Perserverance, determination and single-minded will are always the prime requirements, no matter what the vehicle. Having said that, try the Bornless/Headless Ritual. Enflame thyself in prayer!

I suggest you READ the book that you are talking about. If you did you would KNOW what the Holy Guardian Angel is.
The Abramelin path is a SERIOUS path that takes months to go through. It is a self initiation. It is a path that has thwarted many magickians and is not without risk. That said, there are many Magickians that have successfully completed it.
You cannot hope to understand a path of Magick by taking one part of it without reading and studying the rest.
Humbly, I AM

I have a question...
I heard that there is a book (aside from 21st Century Mage) by someone who has successfully completed the operation... I'm pretty sure it was posted by someone here a few months ago... does anybody maybe know who this author is or what book this is?
edit it is entirely possible that this may have been an E-book or one that was available through the author's website, I just can't remember who it was. I'm pretty sure it was posted here.

I believe "The Sacred Magician: A Ceremonial Diary" is the title of the book in question. Here is a review, taken from here:
William Bloom, The Sacred Magician: A Ceremonial Diary First published under the pseudonym of Georges Chevalier by Paladin/Granada) (Somerset, England: Gothic Image Publications, 1976, 1992) pp 154.
It is not often that I regress temporally for a book review. The frequency with which new Pagan material emerges leaves little time for retrospect, but, on a recent trip to Half Price Books in Indianapolis, I discovered a rough gem to which attention must be directed. William Bloom's The Sacred Magician is a journal, chronicled with attention to psychoanalytical, mystical and magical methodology and subjective experience, of one man's practice of the transformative rites of ceremonial magic. Even more impressive - and it acts as proof of his sincere intentions - is his choice of manual: Mather's translation of The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, a gruelling six month ceremony whose final result is "full communication with your Holy Guardian Angel", the higher self of the practicing magician (it was this true self that appeared to Crowley as Aiwass in 1904; the result was his pivotal Book of the Law).
Ceremonial magic is a subject which draws few adherent authors outside of the classic sources - Dee, Levi, Crowley, Regardie, Mathers, Cicero, et al. With the exception of Konstantinos' passable Summoning Spirits, Steve Savedow's Magician's Workbooks and the sporadic chapter or section on the subject in various compilations, functional and enlightening offerings have been scarce. And that's what makes this book such a find. Sections from Abramelin's grimoire are interspersed throughout, giving the reader a working understanding of Bloom's standpoint and progress and Bloom's own footnotes and meticulous attention to detail reveal an intelligence and acumen that is nothing short of revelatory. Despite occasional heavy-handed references to the Christian faith (which should not be unexpected, as anyone who has investigated ceremonial magic will know), the work and it's accompanying "book list" which catalogs each volume quoted within is an invaluable addition to any magician's library.
I think there's some used copies up for sale on Amazon for those that are interested in picking this up, though prices can be a little steep for it.

One of the more interesting stories I was a part of in this play of Pan...
I have the book, it sits on my shelf. A now distanced friend of mine came over one early evening while the sun was casting a dim orange/purple glow through my window. It smelled of rose and jasmine throughout due to the incense I had lit half an hour before he arrived and wind circulating the scent of various herbs I have tied near my scarlet silk(actually some kind of silk feeling rip-off material that I can't remember the name of) adorned bed.
He came in and we shared some words and I invited him to have some tea. He agreed and I went into the kitchen to prepare. While I was preparing I could hear him pulling books out of the shelf to look over. Almost everyone who visited me did this, and they know I'm not selfish enough to care if they do so without asking. I finished making the tea and entered my room to find him looking through the sigils in the paperback Abramelin I owned. I set down the tea and told him that the sigils were dangerous unless one has bound the demon spirits with help from his Holy Guardian Angel.
Sipping tea we discussed the book and I told him many of things I knew about it and its origins. I also told him of the danger of it. We turned in for the night and he left, seemingly content about what I had told him. The very next day I was approached by a lady friend who told me that his house had caught fire, but that he was not home at the time so he was not hurt. She told me he would be at his parents house. After school I went to see him and he wouldn't come near me. He was completly hysterical and afraid of me, yelling at me with comments like 'It burned my f*cking house down!'. I asked him what the hell he was talking about and he said 'Your damn book! Abra-whatever!' He then started crying and told me to leave. I did.
I went back home and started to look through the book trying to figure out what the hell he was talking about and a page had been ripped out. It was the twenty-third chapter of the third book. It contained a page of sigils for use in destroying strongholds.
Needless to say I never saw him again and he wouldn't talk to me.

As already mentioned, the book in question is "The Sacred Magician". I found it a very interesting read - definitely required reading for anyone contemplating the operation - find out what you're in for!

Did the author actually build the room with the terrace, and wear all the special clothing, eat the diet, etc as described in "Abremelin the Mage"?

You can use the squares, but stuff like that will happen. If you personally plan on useing the squares without meeting your HGA I STRONGLY warn against it.

I do not think anyone meant to imply that you could not use the Squares without being in contact with the HGA. However, it should NOT be done. When one concentrates on Sigils one empowers them. That is how the friend destroyed his house.
Sigils of any kind are able to be empowered by the focus of the Magickian. That is why focusing on Goetic Sigils has gotten some in trouble. It is the same with any Sigil. Look at a Sigil as a circuit board waiting to be empowered. The way they are empowered is through the Focus of the Magickian.

In response to some here questioning the use of the sigils, it probably would not have done a thing if both my friend and I hadn't discussed it for so long. In effect our conversation about it gave it a great amount of energy to use. You know that feeling when you get into a really deep and interesting conversation with someone? It is energy no less than if directing it through ritual.
Granted it probably wasn't enough to instantly catch the house on fire, but it probably was enough to start a small fire that could spread.
Also, the firemen could not find a cause for the fire.

kch-i feel bad for yuo because yuo was robbed of your personal property due to your supposed friends dishonesty. And then this person has the nerve to blame you for his doing is not cool.
it's a shame that things had to come to that to find out that person isn't a real friend.
whatever, what can you do?
