Chaote or Poser?
Original post: Rin Daemoko
While I was in the shower I had a curious though cross my mind. As chaotes we have the freedom of utilizing anything that works to further our aims. A chaote could use Wiccan magick, or ceremonial necromancy, or whatever we like. If it works, we'll use it.
So, at what point does a chaote step into "poser" territory? Is the fact that we know it's a paradigm (tool) what makes all the difference?

I think we become posers when we proclaim that we are not chaotes, but instead the paradigm we are using. When we claim to have the full knowledge of another faith or tradition, we are stepping a social boundary better left uncrossed (in my opinion).

This makes much sense. There's a difference between putting on a mask, and claiming that you were born with that face.

Besides what Drop said, I'd guess it also has to do with when people start going, "yuo r not a tru choas magickijikiciain!"
Those are the true poseurs we've all grown to ph33r!!
Seriously, when you say that people aren't doing Chaos Magic, then you're being a poseur... Or when someone says the dreadful:

It's Chaos Magick for crying out loud! It's not whether we are right or wrong that matters!
Oh yeah, you're a poser when you use poseur instead of poser, as well.

I'd reckon there is a line there and that many of us may have crossed it at one point or another. Though, I feel that if a Chaote picks and chooses and plucks and pulls and ends up embracing this or that paradigm because it suits his or her needs then so much the better and no one really looses.
The main difference that I can see between most paradigms and Chaos is that the others tend to have a few more labels then we do. (them being paradigmers & us/we being Chaotes).
Though, I suppose that if one of us joins a coven cuz it's cool, joins in the rites of said coven, goes home to charge off a sigil then praises Eris before bed THEN he or she is defiantly a poser
On the other hand, if a chaote joins a coven to swipe some of the power (using the rites of their circle to charge his/her sigils) then they are no longer a poser...there are worse words that come to mind then *smirk*

I don't have an answer to your question because I am in fact a poser Chaos Magician. Though I actually prefer poseur, from the French. It's so much more pretentious.

Maybe we become poseurs when we proclaim to everyone that we are chaotes and thus superior to all other traditions (which we are of course)

May i interject a question to you poser or chaote . You use whatever you deem usefull to your advancement . So what makes you a chaote instead of just for example an eclectic ceremonial mage ?

What if you're a chaos magician who claims to be a chaote who claims to be a chaoist? And what if somewhere deep inside the chaoist deep inside the chaote deep inside the chaos magician there's another chaos magician trying really hard to break free from the monotony of various titles that all mean the same damn thing?
I'm getting tired of keeping track. Can I just be a chaosismist?

Consider the question thoroughly answered. Answering questions with questions is a deeply appreciated religious tradition which stretches back to New York, Bronx, 1934. Picture it ...

Reflecting back on my own answer, I too am a poser. I plan on narrowing things down to what I like & dislike then labeling things. So in a way I am what I was referring too.
*shrug* But hey, I fit in so nicely

though the lifestyle of the poseur (of the incompetent artist) the dandy the snob is somehow self-contradictory (cause his life itself can be viewed as an artwork)- its a cool paradigm.

If you do not have a certificate, passport, card, badge, etc. signed by authorized posers then you are not an official poser. The official posers of OF even gave me a badge when they made me an official poser, a.k.a. moderator. Look.

Actually Rin, in my opinion, I think everyone starts off any endeavor as a poser. I have posed as many things throughout my life. If you pose long enough you will start to become the "real thing" (whatever that is) or a manikin.

Alrighty, so there's nothing necessarily wrong with being a poser providing that there's a certain motivation or mentality behind it? Is that what I'm understanding here? This makes perfect sense.
Nalyd23, you make an excellent point about how everyone starts off as a poser in any given field until they become more well-versed in whatever it is they're pursuing. That was part of the reason why I stopped to think about this very issue. At some point everyone poses as something they're not - it's like trying on new pants.

Yes Rin, that is indeed the point I was attempting to make. You pose, fake or mimic it, until it becomes "second nature". Wear the mask until the mask can no longer be distinguished from your face. Where you have tricked even yourself into thinking that it is the "real" you.
EDIT: An excellent movie to watch about doing this is Orsen Welles' F For Fake.

We become a poser when the natives catch on that we're lost in the neato ritual we've had the circle standing there for 2 hours while we babble at the top of our lungs and run out of jibberish.

In which case... we call upon Miss Boobahla to bring us a cup of wine and hope the drummer haven't fallen asleep or left. Maybe they'll get figity enough to start a jam and save our ass!

"Fake it 'til you make it." XD
Yes um... Nalyd is right.
Perhaps Chaotes are less disposed to calling each other posers because it's so hard to even agree what Chaos Magick is in the first place. That is what makes us so cool!
We have less posers because we don't really have an idea what we're talking about!

That's quite reassuring, actually. It lends itself nicely to the chaos of the non-path. Fake it till you make it. We're reserved to call others posers because we ourselves aren't entirely sure what we're doing. That would explain all of the delicious absurdity that abounds. Mmm ... absurdity.

What about this... since everything is permitted, what if I am aware of the possibility of alternate paradigms, but it is my choice to remain a dogmatic ceremonial/thelemite. Can I say I am a chaote using a permanent Thelemic/Ceremonial paradigm. Can I still get the shirt, the card, and acceptance by the in crowd . Do I lose points for not asserting that my reality model is the largest and most-META-est (or contradictory as the case may be)?

In phase two, we plan to release the hyper paradigm Which is defined as being in a paradigm without even knowing that you are in a ChM paradigm...Billions will be converted WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING IT!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
On a more serious note, I would have to say that Chaos Magick is about embracing change, something that it holds in common with taoism...This is in fact a defining trait.
