Computer magick?

I know that someone has probably done something like this here already but...
Do computers have spirits that can be evoked, I wonder? I mean look at the internet...it's practically a godform with all the sheer oodleness of info and power that has gone into it since its creation. well, perhaps not a godform, being that it doesn't seem to have a will, yet.
If computers do have spirits, wouldn't that open up a whole new aveue of hacking/information management? If you could cut a deal with your local machine not to crap up so much cause it dun like you, life would be so much easier for comp junkies like me...
Anyway, post thy thoughts here.

Oh computers definately have spirits; how else would you explain getting them to work by threatening them with magnets/mallets/reformatting? My familiar is my laptop. Or perhaps i should say was, since version two has him existing as a program and not hardcoded (hard-mage-d?) into the computer itself so I can use him both on his original laptop and my PDA.
There are also a lot of chaos magic practitioners who create program and/or website egregores. KIA Speaks is one such creature.

In addition to the plethora of software egregores (XaTuring is another example), this idea is the backbone of the Neil Gaiman novel American Gods- the clash of old pantheon gods with the new gods of internet, automobile, credit card, etc.

You can test computer magick quite easily for yourself. One of the things I do generally is to befriend the egregore/spirit or whatever you wish to call it of the software or site which I intend to work with. Works remarkably well for divination software/sites. Computers are very susceptible to magick in my experience.

I intend to specialize in computer security and Artificial Intelligence from college, because there is a growing need of both. In breif, I see each installation of computing hardware having an AI that takes care of its own security. The AI protects itself, as if it had its own ego. AI would also be used as a User Interface so that people would not have to know how a computer works in order to use it, but could tell the AI what they want done and then the AI would take care of it. AIs like this would communicate with other AIs in order to fulfil the user's wishes, so computers would quickly start building social networks.
This gives birth to a degree of complexity that I have not mapped yet, but what I can say is this:
The sum-total of the wishes of users becomes the 'purpose' and focus of the net, ...until it develops a purpose of its own.

The internet watches me from time to time; on a related note, I've been trying to pull my stuff together for an article on computer magick theory for 2600 magazine. They'll probably think I'm batty.. but still. Any leads?

Once we worshiped at Stone Circles and Megaliths. Now we worship a decive with a heart of stone Or The Silicone Chip.

What is a Computer? a Silicon Chip, vibrating at a frquency that allows it to preform millions upon millions of mathematical processes per second.-Aristotle would have had a felid day with PC.

And the Internet, sometimes compared to the Voodo Spider type Loa with millions of Threads that draw you in.

What do we scarfice to a PC. Our time?

Call me crazy, but one time my computer wasn't working and the techs couldn't figure it out and my normal pleas to Ganeesh for healing did not work. So I created a ritual where I sacrificed some old computers, harvesting their life force, and feeding it into the one needing fixing. It worked! And it sure was fun taking a sledge hammer to those things that have caused me so much grief.

Now, I wouldn't do this with animals or plants (perhaps with people). So, who wants to comments on the ethics of this!

Hmm...my comp i on the fritz right now seriously...the top 2 rows of the keyboard don't work and now I can't even get in because it wants me to change the Windows password but the 1, the domain no longer exists and 2, I can't even type the mofo'in password even if it did.
I'm seriously considering going into Safe Mode, getting all I need off of the hard driver, and reformatting the mother to high hell. Or perhaps it needs an exorcism.

.....I see someone else is having the same thoughts as me. And still there is no one that knows of any magical applications. Thatâ??s it you are all forcing me to create my own Paradigm!

(Shambles off into his shed with a 4by4, some insulated cable, his TV remote and a modem)

"I'm not coming out until I have thought of lots of cool ideas and techniques!" Slams door and begins making bizarre 'oop, oop' noises.*

I will post when I have a good set of my own ideas, then you can mock it or join me, in a blood fueled orgy of hell crazed violence... BYE!!!

I have been brain storming furiously over the subject of Technomancy. One of the first ideas that I had was while I was in the bank the other day....

Set up your ritual room/shed/basement/hovel as you see fit (Preferably with icons of the Omnisire/Machine God, vials of silocon, oil, other circetry)

Have an active moden as your focus point, or a laptop with internet access.

Banish

Invocation to the Omnisire

Have a "It is my will...." thingy to say

Produce your paying in slip and write down a large sum of £££ or a sigil you have created or a spirit from the 50 Names of Marduk or whatever takes your chaotic fancy

Burn the slip in your ritual bowl/coldron etc

Do something wacky that you have to make up on your own

Access the internet and, as the dial tone does its wonders, slip into the astral and meet an entity that is responsible for ATM machines

This entity will give you a sigil (If you give it something in return....like a nice data code or something

Then return to reality

When back in reality and the data codes are all faded pull out your ATM cash card and consecrate it with your wand (T.V remote with a flashlight taped to it with some extra funky circits and cables etc) and project the digil (digi-sigil) over the card.

Gnosis (in any profered way) and fire the Digil 'into' your cash card.

Give thanks/offerings to the Omnisire

Do all you can to futher the cause of AI and if you can, get some cybernetics implanted or something (This is not necessary, just if you feel passionate about AI)

Banish

Finish in any profered way

With your new charged cash card go down to your nearest ATM (preferably at night) and 'implant' the Digil by putting in your card and checking your account balance.

Visualise your cash amount rising higher and highter until you feel satified with the result.

Go home

Banish again

Make a cheese toastie and watch at least 5 episods of StarTrek

Any comments would be cool I have many many more ideas...maybe I'll post later

I am going to do this ritual tomorrow night, I will comment on the effects, success/failure. If anyone else would like to do it with me in unison then you can! You could post your own results so we could compare, contrast and refine.

Well, last night I did my business and I got a real good feeling of success. It was a fun ritual and I had a new experience from the opperation, traveling through the internet and communication with a net entity. I think Im going to do a bigger study and futher experimentation in the subject, work out some spheres or something.
If anyone else did this ritual or wants to, then please post your notes on the subject to see if there were any simularities.

yes technomancy is a powerful medium but technomancers are private souls and dont tend to mix, or share information, also they tend to split machines/computers doing one or another i personally do fruit machines :)

To explain my deep interest in this subject let me tell you about some of my influences.

I am very deep into the Warhammer 40,000 universe (a table top stratagy game which has evolved from D&D) and I have found that the Adeptus Mechanicus (Martian Technology Priests) are full of great inspiration for working rituals. In the 40k universe humanity was seperated from Mars for nearly ten thousand years due to a massive warp storm, and juring this period the human coloniests on Mars grew more and more involved with their technology. Due to a great war against machines in humanities history (about the year 8,000) humanity needed to find a way to still have sentiant machines and make sure that they didnt try to kill their human creators. To achieve this the Technomagi, using their great knowledge of technology and archainia merged machinery with the soul. Now all Imperial technology, including weapony and computers contains a bound soul, or a machine spirit.

This is where I get loads of my ideas from, if you want to learn more then just write Warhammer 40000 adeptus mechanicus into google.

Or go to http://www.criticalhit.co.uk/w40krp/technology.shtml and read the article, especially the STC section.
This is why I love Chaos Magic so much, if you find something that you are really involved in, like Startrek or even something like the Simpsons, you can adapt it to your magical work.

Another very good link that is specifically aimed at the TechnoMagi is:

In my own experience, computers can function as effective incubators of spectral automata, especially those with sufficient vector processing capabilities to handle hyperdimensional recursion. Of course, using a suitably esoteric language certainly helps, along with an efficient transducer for carrying the resulting spectral essence into the temporal domain. Perhaps the best part - and, apologies, as some might find this heretical - is that effective tools can be made manifest using technological tools to bring the art & science of effecting change in accordance with one's will to the masses!
