Inducing Catharsis

Hello folks...

I have been dealing with anxiety and some bouts of depression for the past little while and I've come to the conclusion the best way to tone these down, manage them or all out get rid of them would be to induce catharsis, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I've done some trance work with native American drumming & chanting, which has helped but I want some serious juju here. I just need to break the dam.

I'm not sure what else to say....any suggestions?

Thanks!

I've definitely gone the over exhaustion route a few times (running until vomit) and while nice and moderately alleviating wasn't the catchall I had hoped for.

Maybe the 'ol Spare death posture...

...or EMDR & some hyperventilation....

Hyperventilation is a sure method of heart attack, not cartharsis.

If you really want to experiment with hyperventilation, I can't stop you. But in my experience, you can always have too much of a good thing. There's a difference between breathwork, and killing your cardiac system by inducing oxygen imbalance in the blood.

Lol well a heat attack would be catharsis indeed, but I see you're point...I suppose I will keep that as a juggernaut for this situation.

I appreciate you're input, Draginvry, as well as the concern :)

Perhaps praynayama would be the best substitute for that....

If you are having serious bouts of anxiety and depression, please see a physician or mental health counselor about it. I don't mean to be off-putting but I myself have been there, done that, and I work in medical communications also, so I have to preempt this with saying the "responsible" thing.

That said, what worked for me was rigorous physical exercise in the context of 3HO type Kundalini Yoga which involves simple, repetitive, calisthenic type yoga exercises done past the point of resistance (which is somewhat different than practicing them past the point of "exhaustion") and also intensive breathing practices. After several years of that, I went on to practice more esoteric, meditative forms of Kundalini yoga and experienced the related cathartic effects. The physical exercises help fortify and recondition the nervous system and practicing them past resistance helps overcome the psychodynamic resistances within the psyche. And yoga exercises and breathing practices generally help overcome depression and anxiety mood effects. However certain yogic, breathing, and meditation practices have been known to make matters worse in certain persons who have active or latent neuropsychiatric vulnerabilities. So tread lightly with all this and try to find a group or a person to work with or mentor you with it.

If you want to induce something as simple as crying, or laughter, I find that faking both generally works. You know, go through the motions and find a way of throwing your own emotions into the mix by just feeling it. I've had a lot of pent up stress lately, and I found that doing some energy work that required me to do some heavy concentration on my body cleared my mind and my emotions to some extent.

Look if you are having problems with anxiety and depression, I suggest seeing a therapist in order to find the source of the problems and then find a solution. It could be a poor diet, or lack of exercise, or pent up guilt, anger, trauma from childhood. Perhaps you are simply to harsh on yourself, a perfectionist maybe, therefore feeling overwhelmed causing anxiety and depression. You probably just need a minor adjustment in your lifestyle is all. No need for catharsis... I mean you can always try doing an enema, blaming your issues on a scapegoat, going to a catholic church and confessing your sins, or watching "Titanic", which would be my choice of tragedy to watch for experiencing catharsis. Oh wait I know! How 'bout some good ol' sex? That'll surely get rid of your anxiety and depression. :D

 cognitive/emotive purification must be a lifelong practice, much like taking frequent showers throughout the days and weeks. one primary way to purge oneself is to dwell within healthy environments free of psychological polutants.

:p yah, they're sorta hard to come by. stay away from buildings and civilization and you might get lucky. i mortgage a two-bedroom condo and rent out one of the bedrooms to a meditation teacher, so i'm recently a bit lucky with that. sometimes a walk in nature can be good too, if not excessively littered with distractions.

i wish you the best on your difficult road. i don't know that i have anything to say that can help you. an off the wall suggestion (since you said juju) would be to look into voodou. it might seem crazy, but i can imagine that having a good spirit possession might really be cathartic since you literally leave your ego for a bit. i have nothing to base this on, i am just offering up something that i think will be a strong induction of a mega trance. either way, know that divine providence has plans for us, we've all got our destiny, and some people have to go through tough times to come out stronger on the other side; i really hope you can overcome this trial.

what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger!

Get some Ayahuasca from the web and order it and cook it up according to some good recipés and then ingest it and vomit the hell out of your soul..... Can be intense though, so recommend approaching it with care but it's a very purifying experience and if you've got some spiritually connected friends, bring them along ;)

It really turns the bowels inside out and it's near to impossible to not vomit (depending on ones own physiology of course)... But it's really purifying and any demons or ghosts hiding inside the unconsciousness will definately surface while purging physically....

It's quite fun hehe....

Tell me you're not being serious. That's stupid. I've gotten food poisoning but that never purified mje and led to my inner demons resurfacing. I just felt like shit.

Food poisoning and a highly effective psychedelic is no where near the same thing. Google up on Ayahuasca and read some experience reports from erowid.
