Armenian Genocide: A 100 year old wound.
Armenian Genocide: A 100 year old wound.
This year marks the 100th year of Armenian Genocide. And as an Armenian living in Turkey it is very important for me. I know this is partly political but our wounds are still open. Armenians were systematically murdered by Young Turks during 1915. Turkish Government still denies its past and doesnt recoginze the events. As an Armenian I will stand up for the souls of my ancestors. I remember and demand it. Thanks for reading.

Re: Armenian Genocide: A 100 year old wound.
I just read an article regarding the Pope's beef with Turkey's government, calling the genocide for what it is.
Had to read this for my Global Political Economy class.
I find Turkey's attempt to influence its future through forcibly ignoring the past admirable. Its obvious to me the government wants to separate itself as much as possible from that moment in history. However, at the same time, blatantly stating that it was not a genocide is a bit much for the rest of the world to deal with. The guy who invented the word "genocide" used the Armenian massacre as his case study.
I'm a bit upset with Turkey's government for its reaction to the Pope's words. Retracting their representative from the vatican is not helping the much needed dialogue between Christianity and Islam.
According to most political scientists Turkey is reverting to an "isolationism" foreign policy in recent years. This won't help anyone, especially Turkey who is practically a gateway for IS to the western world. Their image is also tainted by the fact that they openly state that IS is an enemy of the state, but then openly support and harbor Hamas soldiers in their country.
How does and Armenian in Turkey celebrate this moment in history?

Re: Armenian Genocide: A 100 year old wound.
Not only Armenians but there are also Turks who accept the genocide and stand with us. This year people gathered at the Taksim square to protest Turkish Government and demand the acknowledgement of the genocide. Unfortunatly there were national-extremeists who went to the Agos (an Armenian newspaper) building and put a black chaplet. But despite this we have gathered our community and demanded recognition of the events.
